Just a little bit of both👩🏻💻
Because apparently choosing between biology and coding wasn’t enough... so we decided to put them together and call it a degree.😭
Somewhere between analysing sequences, debugging code, and questioning every life decision, bioinformatics just makes sense.
Wouldn’t have it any other way.🧬✨

🧬Every expert was once a beginner.
Learning bioinformatics can feel overwhelming at first, but you don’t need to know everything before you start. Real progress comes from taking small, consistent steps—one concept, one dataset, one line of code at a time. 🚀
If you’re passionate about bioinformatics, genomics, and computational biology, you’re in the right place.

🧬 From wet lab → bioinformatics in 90 days?
You don’t need to become a software engineer first.
If you already understand biology, experimental design, biological questions, and how data is generated, you’re not starting from zero.
Your biggest challenge is learning how to turn that biological understanding into a computational workflow you can execute, explain, and defend.
Here’s the mindset I’d use:
🔹 Month 1 - Learn the tools through biology
Don’t spend 30 days watching Python tutorials.
Use Python to solve small biological problems.
Use Linux to work with biological datasets.
Use Git to track your work.
Learn statistics when you actually need it for an analysis.
🔹 Month 2 - Build instead of consuming
One complete project is worth more than 20 unfinished tutorials.
Start with a biological question → find appropriate public data → analyse it → interpret the results.
The interpretation is important.
A bioinformatics project shouldn’t end with “here’s my plot.”
It should answer: “What does this result mean biologically?”
🔹 Month 3 - Make your work visible
Your project becomes much more valuable when someone else can understand and reproduce it.
Think:
📁 Clean repository
📝 Clear README
⚙️ Reproducible environment
📊 Meaningful results
🧠 Biological interpretation
🎤 Interview-ready explanations
The objective isn’t to convince someone that you know 15 programming languages.
It’s to demonstrate:
“I understand biology, I can work with biological data, and I can use computational methods to answer biological questions.”
And that’s a very different positioning.
💾 Save this if you’re planning to transition from wet lab to bioinformatics.
📤 Send it to a wet-lab friend who’s thinking about making the switch.

My most used DNA checking tools are Snapgene and ClustalOmega 🧬👩💻
After receiving DNA sequencing results back, I always check that my intended mutation was made correctly.
If the sequence comes back messy, I have to go back a step and submit for sequencing again.
Having correct sequences in my plasmids are critical for meaningful results in my studies 👩🔬

I thought learning R meant learning how to code first.
Syntax. Functions. Loops. Packages.
Basically, becoming a programmer before I could analyze my own data.
So I did the opposite.
Start with a real biological question and learn only the coding required to answer it.
This is the exact order I’d follow:
1. Start with your own data or a dataset from your field.
Don’t spend months doing generic coding exercises. Pick a question you actually care about answering.
2. Learn data manipulation before advanced bioinformatics.
Import → filter → select → group → summarize → reshape.
In R, dplyr and tidyr will take you surprisingly far.
3. Learn to visualize early.
ggplot2 taught me more about my data than staring at spreadsheets ever could. Plot before you overcomplicate the analysis.
4. Learn statistics through biological questions.
Don’t memorize a list of tests. Understand what you’re comparing, why the test is appropriate, its assumptions, and what the result means biologically.
5. Then move into bioinformatics.
RNA-seq? DESeq2/edgeR. Pathway analysis? Enrichment tools. Genomics?
6. Save every useful script.
If you solved it once, don’t solve it from scratch next month. Build your own library of reusable code.
7. Today, I’d use AI differently.
Use it to explain errors, unpack unfamiliar code, or help you understand why something works. But don’t run an analysis you can’t explain yourself.
Comment “CODE” and I’ll send you my beginner R + bioinformatics roadmap and free resources. I promise it will help!
Save this for the day you finally decide to start and send it to the biologist who keeps saying, “I’m not a coding person.”
