Según un estudio publicado en BioScience, estas amenazas han puesto a las luciérnagas en la lista de insectos en peligro.
El trabajo titulado “A Global Perspective on Firefly Extinction Threats” advierte que podríamos ser la última generación en verlas.
La luz artificial interfiere con sus señales de apareamiento, dificultando su reproducción y provocando un drástico descenso poblacional.
Además, el uso excesivo de pesticidas destruye tanto a los adultos como a las larvas, alterando su delicado ciclo biológico.
Las luciérnagas cumplen funciones ecológicas importantes, como controlar plagas y servir como indicadores de salud ambiental en los ecosistemas.
Los científicos proponen proteger hábitats naturales, reducir el uso de químicos y limitar la iluminación nocturna para evitar su extinción.
La conservación de las luciérnagas es urgente: su brillo podría apagarse para siempre si no actuamos a tiempo.

This milestone event welcomed esteemed guests, including Dorothy Koch, Associate Director of the Biological and Environmental Research (BER) program at the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science, and Sheila Feddis, Director of DOE Office of Science’s Science Laboratories Infrastructure.
BioEPIC represents an exciting future for groundbreaking research that integrates biology and environmental sciences to address critical challenges, from climate impacts to sustainable energy solutions.
While the center will officially open in early 2025, this moment marked a symbolic start to the scientific discoveries yet to come.
