Songs of the Indigo Bunting 🐦 This morning I saw an Indigo Bunting fly to a branch near me while I was trying to film a Gray Catbird singing. Usually it's difficult to get close to an Indigo but he came right to me. I also got new footage of the same Wood Thrush I posted last week. Which of these 30 bird sounds do you recognize? I filmed all of these in the Eastern US, but many can be found elsewhere. It has been a pleasure seeing all the spring migrants lately. I've had the opportunity to film some new bird sounds that I haven't heard before. My goal is to create a large video library of bird vocalizations with as many species as I'm able to record. I've filmed the sounds of over 200 US species so far, and I'd like to grow that number to 500 over the years. It will be difficult but incredibly enjoyable. Here’s to those summer nights! Sound on! Often heard, but seldom seen, the whip-poor-will chants its name on summer nights in Penn’s Woods. The call carries about half a mile. You may have a chance to see them by the “glowing” of their red or bright orange eyes in the glare of headlights, as they often sit along roadsides waiting for a tasty meal to fly by. Their “eyeshine” is caused by a reflective layer at the back of the retina called the tapetum. The tapetum amplifies small amounts of light by passing it back through the retina a second time. Whip-poor-wills are difficult to detect after nesting season when calling ceases. Whip-poor-wills are often clustered, so if you hear one, you may hear several at a location on any night they are vocalizing. PEENT! It's that time of year—American Woodcocks are popping up and dancing along their migration routes! Courting males produce these short, buzzy calls as part of their mating display. Other calls in the male’s repertoire include a soft, bubbling tuko that precedes the classic peent, along with cackling and chirping during mating displays.
