Day 5 of my Knife Making workshop. Today we took on the tempering and started making the handle, only to realize I have a lot of grinding work to bring the handle (metal /tang) into an even size to fit the wood just right. The last action was to polish the metal down to 400 grit belt sander to really get that light from the blade. Next Tuesday will be the final installment, and I should be leaving with my brand new knife. I’ve handled a lot of knives over my good lord 27 years of working in kitchens. But none will I have had such time with actually bring it into existence, turning it over and over, studying the blade, the edge, the weight, the shine, tempering the metal… this is so cool. Probably going to make a mushroom knife next. #knifemaking #forge #metalwork #blacksmith #craft I’m going to have to extend the intended time by one more day to finish the handle and get the blade set perfectly.

Later messaged me a little while ago saying he wanted to make a pattern welded kitchen knife and I jumped at the chance!! He told me he didn’t want to know the pattern so I kept it secret from the both of us. I spent a day making it and then left it to one side, eagerly awaiting the day of the course. I was so chuffed with how it came out and Peters determination and tinacity have paid off because he has ended the day with one blooming beautiful blade!! #diy #bladesmith #kitchenknife #course #handmade
