Stakes aren’t explosions or life-or-death moments. Stakes are consequences. What does your character lose if they fail? Their job? A relationship? Their sense of self? If the answer is “nothing really” — that’s why your story feels flat. The audience needs a reason to care. Give them one. Most scripts fail before page 10. Not because the dialogue is bad. Not because the idea isn’t interesting. Because the writer never answered three questions: → Who is my protagonist? → What do they want? → What’s stopping them? That’s it. That’s your story engine. If you can’t answer those in one sentence each, your script doesn’t have a spine yet. Everything else — the twists, the subplots, the clever scenes — hangs on that foundation. Too much backstory is killing your script. I see it all the time — page after page of flashbacks, childhood trauma dumps, and “how they got here” before anything actually happens. Here’s the truth: audiences don’t need to know everything about your character. They need to know: → What do they want right now? → What’s stopping them? That’s it. That’s what pulls us in.
