Before “Highway to Hell” became a rock anthem, it was AC/DC’s new song. This 1979 performance captures Bon Scott and Angus Young bringing that now-familiar riff and chorus to the stage before the album’s release. Written by Scott, Angus, and Malcolm Young, the song would become one of the band’s defining tracks. Here, it offers a glimpse of a future classic while it was still fresh. Recorded at Oakland Coliseum Stadium in Oakland, California, on July 21, 1979, this performance comes from Bill Graham’s Day on the Green, where AC/DC shared the bill with Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, and St. Paradise. Featuring Bon Scott on vocals, Angus Young on lead guitar, Malcolm Young on rhythm guitar, Cliff Williams on bass, and Phil Rudd on drums, the show captures the band just before “Highway to Hell” helped expand its international audience.

Before AC/DC became one of the biggest names in rock, they were a young Australian band trying to survive the brutal reality of life on the road. In 1975, Angus Young, Malcolm Young, and Bon Scott wrote a song that captured exactly what it meant to chase a life in rock music — the late nights, endless travel, cheap hotels, getting ripped off, getting knocked around, and constantly fighting to make it to the next show. The unexpected bagpipe section became one of the song’s defining moments. Bon Scott had experience around a pipe band when he was younger, and producer George Young encouraged the band to bring that sound into the track. Scott ultimately played the bagpipes on the recording, creating one of the most recognizable moments in AC/DC’s catalog. #ACDC #ItsALongWayToTheTop #HardRock #RockAndRoll #RockMusic

Follow @historyofconcert for the greatest concerts in history. In 1977, AC/DC sounded like nothing else on the radio. Loud, repetitive, crudely produced, and completely unpolished, their music wasn’t trying to be elegant—it was raw, sweaty, and alive. Bon Scott’s voice didn’t fit neatly into any musical mold, while the band’s lyrics could jump from infections and drunken nights to doomed kids and, somehow, bagpipes. It all seemed completely out of place for the era. Until you saw them live. On an October night at London’s Golders Green Hippodrome, in front of a small crowd, the apparent madness suddenly revealed its genius. This wasn’t a band trying to fit into rock—it was a band reshaping it. AC/DC’s power came from their simplicity and conviction. The riffs were stripped down, the rhythm relentless, and Bon Scott turned every line into something dangerous and unmistakably human. They weren’t attempting to write the future of rock; they simply played their own way without compromise. Looking back, that raw sound became a blueprint that countless hard-rock and heavy-metal bands would follow for decades. Con Johnson llegarían décadas de canciones, conciertos y discos, incluyendo temas como You Shook Me All Night Long, Hells Bells y Thunderstruck. Dos voces muy diferentes, pero una misma historia. Bon Scott ayudó a construir el espíritu de AC/DC y Brian Johnson tomó la posta para llevarlo a nuevas generaciones. #ACDC #BonScott #BrianJohnson #Rock #RockAndRoll HistoriaDelRock Musica ElMundoAlDia
Before becoming the voice of AC/DC, Brian Johnson was already turning heads with Geordie. ⚡ Years before replacing Bon Scott, a young Brian Johnson was fronting the Newcastle rock band Geordie, showcasing the powerful voice that would later define one of rock’s greatest bands. This rare footage was filmed in Baden-Baden, West Germany, during the legendary TV show Pop ’75, where Geordie performed “Goodbye Love”, released in 1975 and written by Alterman-Green. Watching Brian perform here, it’s easy to understand why he was the perfect choice to carry AC/DC into a new era just a few years later. 🎤 The legend didn’t begin with AC/DC… it started long before. #BrianJohnson #Geordie #ACDC #ClassicRock #70sRock
