🪷 Ramgopal Saha Bari: A Legacy of Durga Puja 🪷 Ramgopal Saha was a prominent retailer of wine and spirits in Kolkata, and his family home features a beautifully designed thakurdalan (prayer hall) that is a sight to behold. The Durga Puja initiated by Ramgopal Saha has a rich history, being celebrated for over 175 years. The puja begins on Sashthi evening with the Bodhon ritual and continues until Dashami. This tradition is a hallmark of the family’s legacy, which is shared by many descendants of zamindar families who flourished during colonial times. Originally, organizing Durga Puja was the privilege of the wealthy elite, held in their lavish dalans. It wasn’t until later that community pujas, known as barowari, emerged, initiated by twelve friends who sought to involve public donations and make the festival more accessible. Do you know where in Bengal the same structure is used for both Basanti and Durga Puja? A unique and rare tradition in Bengal! The Kundu Chowdhury family of Mohiari in Andul—an ancient aristocratic heritage of Bengal. The patriarch, Kushai Ram, settled in Mohiari in 1745. Later, his descendant Ramkanta Kundu Chowdhury established the renowned palace in 1816 along with two Shiva temples, which still carry the glory of the past. At the heart of this heritage lies the nearly 300-year-old Basanti Puja. After Shiva Chaturdashi, the Rakkhakhali Puja marks the arrival of the Goddess. Nine days later, the preparation for the idol begins with the first bamboo being cut for the structure. In this courtyard, the idol is brought to life. Here, the deity with her four children returns to her father’s house every six months. Watermelon is offered as a sacrifice, offerings of parched rice are made, and at night, devotees enjoy sweet treats with crisp luchis. On the night of Navami, a boat procession was held, and the immersion ceremony took place in the Saraswati River—a tradition that now survives in memory. Altogether, this Puja continues to preserve an invaluable cultural and historical legacy.
