When the femur (thigh bone) breaks, it’s not just painful — it can seriously affect mobility and daily life. 🚶♂️
Femur fracture surgery helps stabilize the bone using rods, plates, or screws so the bone can heal properly and the patient can return to normal activities faster.
Early diagnosis, timely surgery, and proper rehabilitation play a crucial role in recovery. If there is severe thigh pain, swelling, or inability to stand after an injury, seek medical attention immediately. 🏥

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are widely prescribed to manage acid reflux and ulcers — but when taken long term, they can interfere with more than stomach acid.
What’s often overlooked:
• Magnesium deficiency – Long-term PPI use can lead to hypomagnesemia, sometimes severe enough to cause muscle cramps, seizures, or heart arrhythmias. This is because PPIs reduce acid needed for proper magnesium absorption
• B12 malabsorption – Stomach acid helps release B12 from food. Without it, absorption drops — especially in older adults, increasing risk of neuropathy, memory issues, and anemia
• Iron deficiency anemia – PPIs block the conversion of dietary iron into its absorbable form, especially non-heme iron. This is further worsened by potential changes in hepcidin regulation, a hormone that inhibits iron uptake
• Bone fracture risk – Studies link long-term or high-dose PPI use to increased risk of hip, spine, and wrist fractures, possibly due to impaired calcium absorption and reduced bone remodeling
🧾 What to consider:
• If you’ve been on a PPI for more than a year, talk to your provider about monitoring magnesium, B12, and iron levels
• For some, lower doses or alternative treatments (like H₂ blockers) may be appropriate
• Ensure adequate calcium and vitamin D if long-term use is necessary — especially in older adults
PPIs aren’t inherently harmful — but like any long-term therapy, they’re not without trade-offs.

A non-union fracture is a type of bone fracture that does not heal properly within the expected time frame. In this condition, the broken ends of the bone fail to grow back together, leading to persistent pain, limited mobility, and other complications. Non-union fractures can be caused by a variety of factors such as poor blood supply to the affected area, infection, inadequate immobilization, or underlying medical conditions. Treatment options for non-union fractures may include surgery, bone grafting, or the use of bone-stimulating devices to promote bone growth.

We all lose bone as we age, and the long-term effects of this are osteoporosis and an increased risk of bone fracture. I’m often asked about how to maintain and improve bone health—so in today’s newsletter, I’m pleased to be answering this question, as well as providing some valuable resources for you.
The Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation reports that up to 50% of women and 25% of men aged 50+ will break a bone due to osteoporosis. It’s hugely important to build the best skeletons we can in the first 30 years of our lives and then try to maintain bone mass as we age. But how?
A good friend of mine, Dr. Tracey Clissold, is part of a team that has created the @OSTEOGAINS app, which provides a simple yet healthy solution for strengthening bones and promoting healthy, happy aging. Their research found that bone mineral density in peri-menopausal women can be improved with only three to five minutes of bone-stimulating jump exercises per day. I was a study participant in the series of trials to develop this, and the jump exercises are really simple (e.g., not complex, ballistic, or scary!).

Did you know women lose about 4.4% of their bone density between roughly the ages of 50-54? 😳
That’s not a small number — and it’s one of the reasons why so many women in midlife are at higher risk for fractures, osteopenia, and osteoporosis.
But here’s what doesn’t get talked about enough:
You’re not powerless.
With the right exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle strategies, you can slow bone loss — and potentially even reverse it.
Your bones are living tissue. They respond to how you treat them. 💪
