It’s warm when hiking and cold when on the chair. At -5°F, it’s all about layering.
What I wore:
• Merino base layers (top + bottom)
• Fleece midlayer
• Down puffy
• Gore-Tex shell
• Insulated bibs
• Two-buff system (one always dry)
• Low-light lens + storm lens
• Extra gloves (one pair lives in the pack)
• Hand warmers
• Merino ski socks
• Poles by @yardsale.day
• @armadaskis
Where’s your favorite place to stop after skiing and why is it @rei?
My local REI shop is literally on my way home from the ski resort. There’s nothing better than stopping there after an adventure to get me ready for the next one! This month, you can catch me browsing the aisles for the perfect piece of gear to use my REI Co-op Member Reward on. And while I’m shopping, I can also take advantage of my favorite Member Benefit: getting my skis machine waxed for free 🥳
Next time you’re heading down from the slopes, make sure to stop by REI to give your skis (and yourself) a little extra TLC!

if you don’t have a love hate relationship with your boots, are you ever a skier?
Just kidding, I’m jealous of people who love their boots.
In all honesty, I could get a part of @zipfit linear and that would fix a lot of the problems I experienced, although I kinda want a new shell before I do that since these shells have had a lot of wear.
GRWM as I attempt to pack a 50lb ski bag including:
GEAR:
Telemark Skis
Alpine Skis
Poles
Telemark Boots
Wool Jacket
Bibs
Flip Flops
Bogs Boots
Micro Spikes
Boot Dryers
Tuning/Repair Tools
2 x Duct Tape
Backpack
Answer = Nope.
Had to ditch:
Bibs
1 Bogs Boot
Boot Dryers
Backpack
Micro Spikes

Built for storm days and deep turns, the PowSlayer is made for skiers and riders who don’t head inside when the weather rolls in. Featuring GORE-TEX Pro protection for serious waterproofing and durability, it stays breathable on the climb and reliable when conditions get wild. Thoughtful backcountry features and a lighter feel make it a go-to shell when the snow is firing.
If you’re a Reno Tahoe local head on over to Alpinistas off Mount Rose Highway to try on the PowSlayer and shop around all our other hand curated picks!

Now let’s talk layering. I’m a perpetually cold person who has been skiing since she was 2, backcountry and mountaineering skiing since she was a teen, and teaching her kids to ski for 9 years now- I have my systems dialed so I thought I’d share some insight.
❄️Freezing Ski Day Layering❄️
🧥Outerlayer
Stio Figment or Environ bibs + jacket. Waterproof, windproof, roomy enough for lots of layers, but still looks cute. That’s rare. I’ve been trusting Stio for 15 years now, the gear is amazing and holds up.
👚Base
When it’s really cold, I go with a thicker thermal top and bottoms like the Stio Basis PeakWool or Trax Power Grid (my go-to for backcountry days because of the long front zip).
👕Midlayer
This is where most go wrong. A fleece won’t cut it on a negative day. The Stio Dawner Insulated Jacket has become my everything jacket in fall and winter paired with the Fernos Insulated Knicker. These have completely changed cold ski days for me.
I top it off with a Thermic heated vest for extra-cold days. Yea battery power.
🧢🧤🧦
Balaclava + headband + Stio’s helmet cover that’s so cozy my 6 year old steals it from me.
Thermic heated mittens- turn it up to level 3!
Thermic heated socks or the heated insoles- sometimes I do both, not joking.
Having severe Raynaud’s means staying warm is something I’ve had to work very hard at, but it’s worth it because being in the mountains is my happy place. So ask me questions, I have a lot of experience to share.
🌎 @stio makes their gear sustainably, PFAS-free, and mostly with recycled materials. Using my code supports my storytelling and helps me keep creating content rooted in nature, connection, and family. This is an ambassador-only sale. You won’t find it on their site.

layers for backcountry skiing ‼️🚨
SOCKS! I didn’t mention them here bc I talked about them in my first video but definitely invest in a new pair of ski socks. I prefer the low cushion @lebent_ or ultralight @darntoughvermont ski socks.
HELMET buy it new! You have no idea what a helmet has been through when you buy used. Protect your noggin pls.
If you do other winter sports, a lot of those layers will be transferable to backcountry skiing! Other than a few key pieces, most of my kit is not backcountry or ski specific. It’s a lot of general outdoor gear and Nordic skiing layers, and it’s the same stuff I’ll be wearing on a winter run or bike since that’s what I already own.
Items I’m wearing in the video:
@girosnow helmet - this one doesn’t have a BOA adjustment system which I’d really recommend getting
@kincogloves W’s mittens
merino wool glove liners
@skidagram brim hat
@skidagram neck gaiter
@rockbros_usa sunglasses
@salomon Gore-Tex Pac Lite Shell
@patagonia_snow Micropuff Hoody
@outdoorresearch Hemisphere II Gore-Tex uninsulated bibs
@wild_rye_ Hailey Half Zip
@kuvetta_athletic athletic shorts (what I’m wearing under my bibs!)

The boot room update:
I personally inspected my boots, and the 7, 11, and 16-year-old boots.
Shockingly?
No smell.
Credit to Montana’s dry air — and a storage system that actually works.
