The first thing you hear after the rain stops in El Yunque. The last thing you hear before you fall asleep on the porch. The sound the island makes when it is talking to itself. The coquí is roughly the size of your thumb. He weighs less than a quarter. He lives nowhere else on Earth. Scientists have tried to relocate him to other rainforests — Hawaii, Florida, the Dominican Republic. He survives but he stops calling. The call only happens here. That is the whole inheritance in one small frog. 🇵🇷 We left the island. The coquí did not. Every Boricua kid in the Bronx, in Orlando, in Chicago, in Cleveland, in Hartford has heard this sound in a memory or in a recording or in a story their grandmother told them.
