.: Blue Flax Sketch :. ✏️💙 Sometimes the simplest flowers are the most fun to build into a composition. For this little blue flax study, I started with the basic structure of each flower and then played with their size, direction, and placement to make the group feel natural. A few open blooms, a small bud, some leaves, and suddenly there’s a whole composition on the page. This is something I want you to remember when practicing botanical drawing: you don’t need to start with a complicated flower. Simple subjects give you space to practice observation, proportions, movement, and composition without getting lost in too many details. And honestly, sometimes those are the sketches I enjoy the most. ✍🏼 ✨ Save this for your next flower drawing practice, and tell me: which simple flower should we sketch next? I hope you have an amazing day! Much love. 💕 #botanicaldrawing #floralsketch #howtodrawflowers #floraldrawing #akbaly

A little glimpse into a cozy winter drawing! ✨ This rosemary wreath with star anise was created slowly, step by step — with attention to detail, rhythm, and calm observation. In the Botanical Club, we draw illustrations like this together, taking time to feel the plants — their structure, character, and natural flow.🌿 If you enjoy slow, mindful botanical drawing, you’re always warmly welcome. #botanicaldrawing #slowdrawing #winterbotanicals #mindfulart #natureinspired
Link in bio ✨ It's finally here! I've just opened registration for my intermediate course, Start to Finish: Botanical Drawing for Intermediate Artists. This course is designed to show you how I create work in my own studio — how I set up a reference photo, build PanPastel backgrounds, and layer colored pencils to build depth, subtlety, and nuance. You'll see how I make choices about color, light, and details so you can understand the techniques as well as the thinking behind them. By the end of the course, you'll complete a highly refined, professional drawing, and you'll have a deeper understanding of how to approach your own work — in any subject — with confidence and care. My beginner course is also open for enrollment through Sunday! Feel free to post if you have any questions 🤗
🌸 Struggling to draw flowers that actually look like the flowers you’re observing? The problem might not be your petals… it might be your foundation. One of the biggest challenges beginners face when drawing flowers is trying to capture every petal and detail right away. But flowers aren't just collections of petals. They are three-dimensional forms with structure, volume, and perspective. Before adding details, try asking yourself: “What simple shape is holding this flower together?” Most flowers can be simplified into just five basic structures: 🌼 Circle 🎺 Trumpet 🔔 Bell 🥣 Bowl ✨ Combination (a mix of two or more shapes) Starting with these larger forms helps you: Create more accurate proportions Understand how petals wrap around the flower Draw the same flower from different angles easily Feel less overwhelmed by complex details Build more confident botanical sketches For example, a daisy or sunflower can begin as a simple circle, a morning glory can be built from a trumpet shape, and a tulip can start with a bell structure. Once the overall form is correct, adding the petals and details becomes so much easier because you already understand the structure underneath. So the next time you want to draw a flower, don't begin by asking: “Where does every petal go?” Instead, ask: “What basic shape can I simplify this into?” That one question can completely change the way you approach botanical drawing. 🌸 🚨Save this reel for your next flower sketching session, and try identifying the basic shape before you start drawing!
