hot take..crescent lake park might be the best park in st pete 👀
🦢 every time I come here something different is happening, fog rolling over the lake, pelicans flying overhead, ibis along the shoreline, a great blue heron standing guard, or what honestly looks like a small dinosaur (anhinga aka “snake bird”) drying its wings by the water
🦆 it’s one of those places you can walk a hundred times and notice something new
if you’re exploring St. Petersburg, Florida or thinking about moving to the Tampa Bay Area, add crescent lake park to your list 🦚
but now I’m curious..
what’s your favorite park in st pete? 🤔

This massive county park near St. Petersburg has a 125-year-old fort, stunning Gulf beaches, and 7 miles of paved bike trails.
If you’re visiting the area, Fort De Soto Park is a must.
The park really pops during high season, but the beaches here are HUGE and there’s a surprising amount of parking. Access is free and parking is only $6 for the day — which is honestly a bargain for a Florida beach day.
We parked on the north end and biked south along the paved trail, stopping to check out the beaches and explore Fort De Soto.
The old coastal defense batteries are incredibly cool. You can walk through the eerie concrete rooms and see historic photos showing how the fort was built and how it changed over time.
On the way back north we stopped at the park’s self-guided nature trail where we learned about the local plants and wildlife — including this osprey just hanging out above the trail.
Fort De Soto is one of the best outdoor spots in the St. Petersburg area whether you’re biking, birdwatching, or just looking for a quiet stretch of beach.
Save this for your next Florida trip 🌴
Next stop: the Everglades in search of manatees and alligators.
See ya soon!

A day at Fort de Soto Park in St. Petersburg, Florida, is like stepping into a picturesque postcard! This sprawling 1,136-acre paradise is a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. As the sun rises, the park awakens with families biking along scenic trails, birdwatchers spotting pelicans and herons, and anglers casting lines into the tranquil waters.
As noon approaches, the sandy beaches beckon for sunbathing and sandcastle building, while picnickers savor treats at shaded picnic tables. The park is home to one of the most popular camping spots in the area, often buzzing with laughter and campsite camaraderie.
When the golden hour rolls around, grab your drone for stunning aerial shots. The vibrant hues of a Florida sunset—fiery oranges, pinks, and purples—paint the sky, reflecting beautifully on the Gulf of Mexico, giving you breathtaking views of the horizon.
Fun fact: Fort de Soto is named after Hernando de Soto, the Spanish explorer, and it boasts a fascinating history as a Civil War fort. Additionally, it’s a critical stopover for migratory birds, making it a hotspot for birdwatching.
As the day winds down, the park transforms into a serene landscape, inviting peaceful moments by the water’s edge. With countless photo opportunities and enchanting vistas of the greater Tampa Bay Area, Fort de Soto is truly a treasure in Florida’s crown! #travel #florida #gulfofmexico #drone #ftdesoto

🌲STATE PARK NEAR SARASOTA WITH RARE FLORIDA BIRD?!🏕️ That’s right! Oscar Scherer State Park is best known for being the home of the Florida Scrub Jay, a species that is exclusive to Florida and has been threatened by habitat destruction, fragmentation, and degradation from development and agriculture. They need a scrubby flatwoods habitat to thrive, and most has been removed due to agriculture or development (makes me so sad!) The Florida Scrub Jay is protected under the U.S. Migatory Bird Treaty Act and also protected as a Threatened species by the Federal Endangered Species Act and as a Federally-designated Threatened species by Florida’s Endangered and Threatened Species Rule. They occasionally do prescribed burning in the park as it’s an essential element to conserving their habitat and keeping the scrub healthy.
Bald eagles also tend to nest in the park in Winter and are commonly seen (right now there’s a bald eagle’s nest on the Green Trail). Other species found in this park are the indigo snake, gopher tortoise, and gopher frog. The park welcomes over 250,000 visitors annually, and was such a blast to camp at. Visitors can also canoe, fish, swim, picnic, hike, bike, and more. Pets are allowed in designated areas and must be leashed (6 feet or less). Follow @sunshineandkeylimeblog for more things to do!

If you love wildlife, don’t miss Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve near Fort Myers.
This incredible boardwalk trail winds through a cypress slough where we spotted all kinds of wildlife including a sleepy Great Blue Heron, a noisy American White Ibis, and a busy Pileated Woodpecker.
We also saw our first Wood Stork while biking the nearby John Yarbrough Linear Park Trail.
Unfortunately we may have also spotted an invasive Burmese Python, a reminder of how challenging invasive species can be for Florida ecosystems.
It’s pretty amazing how much wildlife exists so close to the city.
Save this for your next southwest Florida trip.
Next stop: Big Thicket National Preserve.
