Painting the nose is a dialogue between structure and sensitivity. I begin by establishing the darker tones around the nostrils, allowing the shadow to define the depth of the form. From there, warmer mid tones gradually build the bridge of the nose, each brushstroke adjusting the balance between light and volume. The movement of the brush is not rushed. The wrist turns gently, letting the planes of the nose appear little by little. Shadows, mid tones, and highlights slowly negotiate with one another until the form begins to breathe. Over time I realized something similar happens in our conversations with people. When you learn to think with the mind while also listening with the heart, you no longer feel the urge to win. You begin to leave a small opening in every exchange. Maturity is not forcing change. It is allowing space for both sides to move a little closer.
