Patio display arrangement Before moving the whole display back a metre to open up the view of the garden from the kitchen window I rearranged the display first so I only had to move it all backwards. You can plant a selection of bare root perennials and summer bulbs in a large container to create a pretty combination for summer. It’s like a whole mini garden in a pot! If your patio containers are all full of spring bulbs right now, you can pot up the bare roots to get them started first like we did, then transfer them into the container in early May after the spring bulbs have finished. Eventually, perennials spread out and will need more space, but this is a nice way to grow bare roots in the first year before they get too big for pot combinations. If you already have an empty big pot ready to plant, you can plant your bare root perennials directly into it, but tender summer bulbs like dahlias and begonias will need to be added later after risk of frost has passed. For this pot, we used 1 x echinacea, 2 x ornamental grasses, 1 x begonia, 1 x dahlia, 1 x astrantia, 1 x geum It’s a great time to start planting.
