This colony of Pseudoglomeris tarsalis is months overdue for an overhaul! It's still doing well but I fear production will slow if I don't finally redo it. Fortunately the bark is still of good quality, so this will be a simple rehouse from the old enclosure to a new one with fresh substrate. One of the most fooling insect mimics hands-down, this is a Carausius species stick insect. When they feel disturbed, their limbs are held straight and rigid to form the perfect shape of a branch. Up in the trees, they can sway to the rhythm of the wind as further camouflage. Their hidden nature has caused some issues throughout world trade as well. Mantises are some of my favorite animals. I grew up up raising them and feeding them other bugs and have always been just overwhelmed by how beautiful they are.. this mantis is Empusa pennata — there are various Empusa species around the Mediterranean. (Somehow this looks like an insect that you would find in the rainforest, I was surprised to learn that this one is from Spain!)
