Ice out on Sawbill! It was out by the evening of May 5th, with one small ice flow blocking the landing. This morning, May 6, even that ice flow is gone! In the Boundary Waters we catch fish, clean them, cook them over wood we gathered. Eat them the same night. And something about that feels more real than most of my actual life. Arne Naess spent 12 years alone in a mountain hut in Norway writing about why modern humans feel so hollow. His answer was simple. We convinced ourselves we were separate from nature. That it was something to visit, not something we are. I think he was right. I think most of us know he was right. The question is what you do with that. #bwca
