Ray and Karen DeVite have spent the last year and a half turning the train cars — so far a bright yellow 1970 Chessie System caboose and a red Nickel Plate caboose — into Airbnbs, located at 72 Hill Street. The latest arrival is a 1924 red all-wood Chesapeake and Ohio caboose, brought to Xenia from a backyard in Fairfield where it had been since 1985. The previous owner connected with the DeVites after reading an article about their venture in the Dayton Daily News, Ray said.

Couldn’t be prouder of Old Fort and happy for this town. I honestly didn’t know about the Old Fort Loops before Hurricane Helene. And now I do. Old Fort has a train museum and caboose that you can visit. Naturally we will have to come back. They also have ebike rentals so you can go trail riding. Supporting local small towns has always been something we love doing but especially our local Western North Carolina mountain towns. Hurricane Helene wrecked this area and Swannanoa which is very nearby. Natural disasters aren’t going away. They will always happen. The entrance to the tunnel is blocked by a door painted to look like the front of a train engine. A geocacher reaches out and grabs the knob on the door, pulling out a model train onto the tracks.
