Roughly 200 hours later…
Second cast drawing at @grandcentralatelier.
It’s hard to believe this drawing has been with me since October. What a humbling and illuminating experience it has been to dive so deeply into a craft and realize how infinitely far there is to go. The knowledge I’ve gained in such a short (long?) time has me feeling like a brand new person ☀️

Old Master Inspiration. There are so many things that make Renaissance Drawings of the 15th and 16th centuries so unique. It’s so much more than simply the materials and techniques. The process and approach is mysterious and obscured by history.
There is one week left to sign up for the Old Master Drawing Apprenticeship Online and just a few spaces left. More info and enrolment via link in bio.

There’s a point in a cast drawing when you realize how much there is to see. A small shift in value can turn the form, an edge can come forward or recede, and every adjustment affects the way the drawing reads. You learn to slow down and really observe.
This drawing by first-year student @alvierart is a great example of that kind of observation. It takes time and patience to bring a drawing this far, but more than anything, it takes learning how to see.

The last cast drawing of the spring semester at @barcelona.academyofart
Definitely had to push myself on that one but it’s unbelievable how much you learn from staring at it every day and surpassing your internal boundaries.
Can’t wait to return in October!

A time lapse of the Saint Andrew cast drawing
A quick look back at the process of this cast before starting the new term tomorrow. Excited for things to come, both for myself and those around me!

🏎💥First Year student @luisgarcia.art giving it all on his cast drawing of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux’s death mask. We can see the early stages of the process where he’s studying the structure of the cast and working on a thumbnail value study to understand the light effect and composition.

Portrait drawing checklist before you start
1. If you find the shape difficult to understand
Try stepping away from thinking of it simply as a human face.
We all have familiar images and preconceived ideas about what a face should look like.
We tend to perceive faces based on familiar views, such as the front or side, but the actual form and angle of a face vary from person to person and from pose to pose.
Rather than trying to complete the eyes, nose, and mouth one by one from the beginning, it can be helpful to see the face as a simple geometric form.
First, identify the points you consider important as reference points, and compare their positions and proportions.
Connect these reference points to check the overall form and proportions first, then gradually refine the details.
2. If the face looks too dark
If the entire face feels too dark, check the tones in the shadow areas rather than the light areas.
A convincing sense of depth and focus comes from establishing the correct relationships between light and shadow.
