“My cat doesn’t like to play” is my favorite phrase to hear, because I can’t wait to show you that they probably do like to play! Play is undeniably built into the genetics of cats because it is heavily tied to hunting and acquiring food. We can learn how to play with our cats through the existing research and even just watching how their typical prey move around in the world. If you think your cat doesn’t like to play, give these hacks a try and let me know how it goes! There’s so much to experiment with. If you want to dive into this topic and learn more, check out @mikel.delgado book Play With Your Cat! or any of the podcasts she’s been featured on. She’s the #1 cat industry play expert, for sure. #cat #cattips #catlover #catbehavior

Stop petting your cat every time they walk past you. It might seem like a small gesture of affection, but constantly interrupting your cat with touch can make your presence less predictable. One of the reasons cats often trust certain people more than others is predictability. In feline behavior, being able to anticipate what will happen next reduces stress and helps cats feel in control of their environment. When your cat walks past you, they’re not always asking to be touched. They might be moving to a sleeping spot, checking a noise they heard, getting a drink or simply exploring. If every pass results in someone reaching for them, they lose the ability to move through their environment without being interrupted. This doesn’t mean you should stop petting your cat. It means paying attention to whether they’re actually inviting interaction. Cats often initiate contact by rubbing against you, head bunting, lingering nearby or returning after briefly walking away. Those moments are much more likely to lead to relaxed, enjoyable interactions for both of you. I’ve noticed that giving Hades the freedom to walk past me without always reaching for him has made him much more likely to come back a few moments later looking for attention on his own. Have you ever noticed your cat walking away when you reached out to pet them? ❤️ #catbehavior #catbodylanguage #cattrust #understandingcats #catcaretips
