Witness the construction of what is believed to be the strongest of all known insect cocoons - made by none other than the denki mushi slug caterpillar, Monema flavescens! 🐛⚡️🥚 The cocooning process begins when a final instar denki mushi caterpillar finishes feeding, and seeks out a spot to begin construction. These slug caterpillars are quite particular, only choosing to build their cocoons within the junctions between branches. Once a suitable spot is found, the denki mushi uses its mandibles to strip bark from the branches, and then lays a pad of silk atop the peeled area. With this foundation in place, the caterpillar proceeds to spin silk around itself for the next two hours or so until it is encased in a soft, oval net of silk. About halfway through the cocooning process, the denki mushi begins excreting a chalky white liquid that it’s been stockpiling inside its malpighian tubules (insect kidneys). This substance is calcium oxalate monohydrate, and it rapidly combines with the soft silk cocoon to crystallize it into an impressively durable structure. It’s still not definitively understood how the characteristic stripes of the denki mush cocoon are formed, but I believe they are the product of the rhythmically elliptical movements made by the caterpillar as it paints calcium around its cocoon. Given that there is so much variation between the patterns of different cocoons, it’s clear that each denki mushi has its own artistic touch! The cocooning process showcased here took about seven hours total - this video is at nearly 500x speed! During the long recording process, a brief power outage corrupted one of the video files. Given my limited knowledge of uncorrupting MP4s, that took an additional two hours 😅 Most of the information I’ve gathered about the cocooning process of Monema flavescens comes from a paper titled “Insights into the structure and composition of mineralized hard cocoons constructed by the oriental moth” (Qin et al. 2022), which I recommend reading if you want more information on the incredible biochemical composition of these cocoons - truly remarkable feats of caterpillar engineering! #denkimushi #cocoon

I had many requests to add this to the permanent feed - so here you have it : The pupation of a monarch caterpillar 🐛. The real time of this video was only 7 minutes. It’s at 10x speed here . It takes about 2 weeks to go from egg to this stage. What you are seeing here is the change from caterpillar to chrysalis. I saw this fellow was getting ready to change, and was able to watch it and get a video. It is really hard to catch this exact moment, so I’m glad to be able to share it with you 🦋. I’ll give a very basic explanation of what is happening here: First off, the caterpillar hangs upside down in a J-shape from a silk pad it spins on a secure surface. It will hang there for 12-24 hours before the next stage. When they are ready, they shed their skin. The skin splits open from the head, and it wriggles out, revealing the green chrysalis underneath. (We can tell they are getting close to this part when the skin looks thin and takes on a green hue.) At the top of the chrysalis is the cremaster, a small black hook-like structure. The chrysalis wiggles to embed the cremaster into the silk pad, securing it with tiny barbs. That’s why it’s wriggling around all wild after its skin peels off (words that should never go together). The chrysalis then hardens over 1-2 days and smooths into a jade green casing with small golden dots. Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar transforms into a butterfly over 10-14 days. That is a whole other wild process where they literally liquify into soup and reform… things I low-key wish I never learned 🤯. So, there you have it. The magical and kind of creepy essential step to becoming a butterfly 🦋. I will be trying to get a video of this guy emerging in a couple of weeks… but it all comes down to being in the right place at the right time.
DANGER CATERPILLAR PARTY! 🐛🥳 The stinging hairs on these Saddleback Caterpillars (Acharia nesea) can cause severe pain if accidentally touched! 😳❌ It is a pretty smart way for these usually defenceless animals to survive, but would be very unfortunate for someone bumping into them! 😵 They are just one of the many gems of the Amazon rainforest that you can admire but not touch! 🌳👀 . . . #wildlife #caterpillar #insect #bug #nature #amazon #peru #animals #fyp #instagram #wild #rainforest
Raising cecropia moths has been sitting a while on my bucket list but it was well worth the wait ❤️ On a side note: if you want to raise cecropias I don’t recommend feeding them sycamore like I did. Though it’s one of their host plants, it’s not really preferred. But they are polyphagous eaters and can feed on maples, box elder, birch, cherries, willows, plums, sassafras and more :) • • • • • #cecropia #moth #hyalophoracecropia #cecropiamoth #lepidoptera #entomology #caterpillar #saturniidae #saturniids #insect #fyp
