100 Years of Celia! Today we dig into the CCCADI archives to celebrate the legendary Celia Cruz on her centennial. Ibayé!
To many she was the Queen of Salsa, but to us she was more than that: a towering ancestral force, deeply grounded in her African roots. She grew up 🇨🇺 singing Yoruba songs and her music was, from the beginning, a celebration of our Sacred Traditions.
This clip comes from our African World Rhythms concert in 1990 at Riverside Church, part of CCCADI’s Expressions Festival, and one of several occasions in which Celia’s spirit aligned with ours in honoring the ancestors and keeping our culture alive.

I am doing a project at CCCADI @cccadi in New York (can’t say what, yet!) and I just found this children’s book from 1970s with Arawak words used in 🇵🇷♥️
@celiacruz @omerpardillomanager #celiacruz #celiacruzlegacyproject #celiacruzvive #celiacruzfoundation #celiacruzlegacy #100añosdeazúcar

Via @cccadi - KABIOSILE!! The feast of Changó is approaching (December 4th)
Tune in on December 6th at 7 p.m. for a virtual Sacred Traditions program commemorating the feast day of the orisha Changó (celebrated on December 4th), lord of drum and dance, and a figure of social justice. This program will offer a look at how Changó is celebrated within the NYC Lucumí community with a musical presentation by master batá and rumba abakuá musicians. Plus, master musician and scholar Chief Baba Neil Clarke (Olo Oshun, Babalawo, Awa Ayan) and CCCADI Executive Director Melody Capote will share an educational discussion about the history of these traditions in NYC.
Los Tambores Son de Changó (The Drums Belong to Changó) will highlight the traditional art of batá playing in New York as greatly impacted by master percussionist Orlando “Puntilla” Ríos, who moved from Havana, Cuba, to the South Bronx, New York in 1980. Puntilla trained and initiated Añá drummers and shared with the NYC Yoruba community teachings on how to properly execute the different rituals related to the sacred Batá drums, referred to as Fundamento Batá - essential to Yoruba practices.
This presentation features some of Puntilla’s students and members of Nueva Generación who continue to preserve this music as well as master practitioners of the tradition.

For the first time since the #yearofreturn in 2019, the AfroLatinx community have finally joined their fellow Diasporic brothers and sisters on this Sankofa journey to exercise their right to return and reclaim Africa.
The historic pilgrimage was organized by a partnership between the @godboxtours and @cccadi
The creation of this pilgrimage was born from the clear need to bridge the gap between the African Diaspora from within Latin American communities to the Pan-African ideology that the only way to overcome white supremacy is by rejoining the umbilical that was cut between Africans and the global African Diaspora.
Join the @godboxtours for the journey of reconciliation within Ghana 🇬🇭 and the rest of the African continent.
