Cemetery symbols, part 3 ☝🏼⏳🦋
Happy Friday the13th!
Abney Park Cemetery opened in 1840 as one of London’s “Magnificent Seven.” Once planted with more than 2,500 species of trees and shrubs as a Victorian arboretum, it has since grown into one of the city’s most atmospheric wild woodlands.
Where the Dead Waited Until Spring: Inside a Cemetery Receiving Vault Most people walk right past these strange (usually) stone structures in old cemeteries and never give it a second thought, but it once held rows of coffins.
It’s called a receiving vault, and before modern burial equipment and winter digging methods, this is where the dead were kept when the ground was frozen solid. Sometimes coffins waited here for weeks, and even months, until spring thaw allowed graves to be dug.
Imagine a quiet cemetery in the dead of winter with snow on the ground, and beneath the hill a stone chamber filled with caskets waiting in the darkness.
In this video, I take a quick look at one of these forgotten cemetery receiving vaults and talk about the eerie history behind them. It’s one of those pieces of the past most people have never heard about, but once you know what it was used for, you’ll never look at old cemeteries the same way again.
Would you step inside?

Although the words are often used interchangeably, did you know that technically, a cemetery and a graveyard are different?
A graveyard is a burial ground associated with a church (once commonly referred to as churchyards), whereas a cemetery is a burial ground that stands on its own, not tied to a church.
Did you know this?
A cemetery where you really must keep up with the Joneses. #cemetery #graveyard #grave #Vermont #travel
Tombstone Typo. They do happen and occasionally you'll find one, or in the case of this cemetery, you'll find 4.
