Wavy Mug, Part 1 In this first video, I’ll show you how I made the body of this mug. In Part 2, I’ll show the making of the handle. For this wavy mug, I roll the slabs to about 1/8 of an inch and (not shown in the video) I take the time to compress both sides of the slab very well with a metal rib in order to make the slabs stronger and prevent cracks. I do also compress the top rim of the rectangle for the mug to have a thinner rim. I create the waves when the clay is nice and soft. Once I’m happy with the shape, I let it dry under plastic until it’s leather hard, and then I smooth it and add the coil and base. Fixin’ drips 💧! As some of you know, I love the drips. I love the way the flowing glaze is caught in a moving moment. Reminds me of the trees on the Oregon Coast. Formed by the persistent and consistent powerful winds and ocean spray, the trees look like they are in a constant windswept state. It’s beautiful! I have to attend to drips that roll past the bottom of the mug. Otherwise the mug would tip over. I use a diamond sanding bat (you can get these at @diamondcoretools ). The diamond sanding bat is attached to my wheel. Adding water is key to this process. Water 💦 stops the dust and the heat from the friction of the spinning wheel head. Holding on to this mug for dear life! NEW mugs….a slight angle on the cup and a wider, bigger handle. What do you think? I have made 6 and I plan to glaze each one in a different colour to see how they look. It’s been slow in the studio recently, there is not much space, it is cold and it gets dark so early and I much prefer to work in natural light. I haven’t even started Christmas properly!!
