Before it’s done, it needs this.
Foot trimming — shaping how the piece sits and feels.

Glazing is where the piece starts to reveal its personality.
Each brush stroke, pooled edge, and subtle shift in tone is part of the handmade pottery process.
This is functional ceramics made slowly in my studio, glazed by hand, fired with care, and created to be used every day.

Based in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, Jet’s Pottery is a hobby studio founded by Jane Topliss in 2019. Located near the historic Blenheim Palace, Jane creates every piece by hand in her home studio, fueled by a passion that began with a single pottery class.
Her work captures the tactile joy and creative “accidents” of the craft, turning raw clay into heartfelt pieces that bring the magic of the kiln into your home.
Texture is not just a detail; it’s the soul of the piece. Watching @jets.pottery masterfully manipulate the surface using the sodium silicate technique is absolutely mesmerizing. From a smooth surface to a rugged, organic masterpiece—this is the art of patience. 🏺✨

Why Wedging Matters
Wedging is where every piece truly begins.
Before the wheel spins or the clay is shaped by hand, wedging removes air bubbles, aligns the clay particles, and creates an even consistency throughout.
We all hate it, buts it’s an essential part of the process.

The process I enjoy least - applying and wiping back black copper oxide after the first bisc firing 😩 It’s worth it though as it brings out all the lines and marks on the pieces 🥰

An afternoon spent with @ki6bnp filming some larger carvings. The downside of making smaller cups and bowls is you end up with lots of trimmings, at least I do. Which means lots of clay to reclaim. I've been trying to use it up by making larger vases and planters, this one is a mix of charcoal and porcelain, which are polar opposite, but blend together with a relatively smooth sandy colored finish. Carving something like this takes some adjustments as you have to take up SO much more space. For the bottom third, I trimmed some ridges, then added short vertical lines and rounded edges to create a floral effect. The top two thirds were divided into vertical sections, then added some layered details. Most of this is practice so I'll experiment with the glazing as well, maybe something inlayed into the grooves, or solid on each petal?
