Have you heard of Post-exertional malaise? Post-exertional malaise, or PEM, refers to the feeling of fatigue or other CFS symptoms worsening following any form of exercise, activity or exertion. Somebody struggling with PEM may feel much worse and crash with fatigue after walking to their local shops or even to the other end of their garden. in severe cases, sufferers can experience PEM from minor tasks, such as taking a shower or even brushing their teeth. it can also arise from mental exertion or stressful experiences; it’s like a form of payback from previous activities. importantly, the fatigue experienced by sufferers is incredibly debilitating and life-impacting. PEM remains one of the hallmark symptoms that distinguishes CFS from other overlapping conditions, such as depression. In depression, exercise has been shown to improve patient outcomes, whereas CFS patients tend to get much worse with exercise.
