Do you like matcha tea? Cha-do (茶道), aka Japanese tea ceremony, translates literally to 'the way of the tea', and is a centuries-old zen social practice of preparing and drinking powdered matcha green tea in Japan. Cha-do ceremonies are a precise, flowing dance; practitioners spend years, if not decades, perfecting their craft and forming relationships with fellow students in tea houses. There are many "schools" of chado, each with their own unique variations of practice. Tea ceremony ceramics, room layout, and the small wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) served with the ceremony, change with the season. At @camellia.kyoto Tea House in Kyoto, Japan, FoodUnfolded Visual Editor @sachimulkey learned a few tips for those who want to try chado for themselves: 1. Eat your seasonal wagashi sweet first to compliment the flavor of the tea 2. Always warm your bowl with the hot water, and dry it thoroughly, before making your tea 3. Before drinking your tea, rotate your cup so that the design faces away from yourself, as a sign of respect to the cup and other students 4. This gathering in Japan was inspired by the idea that tea can become a quiet bridge between cultures.
