Chaim Soutine was part of the early 20th century Paris art scene — but his work looked nothing like anyone else’s.
He painted with raw emotion: distorted faces, wild brushstrokes, colors full of tension.
Deeply inspired by Rembrandt, but entirely in his own world.
Soutine’s art wasn’t about beauty — it was about feeling.
And once you see it, you don’t forget it.

The first English language biography of the artist Chaïm Soutine is coming to bookstores so soon!!
From the @newyorkermag [Chaim] Soutine, born in a shtetl in the Lithuanian part of Russia (now Belarus) in 1893, the tenth of eleven children in a family of menders (a caste below tailors), was an outlier all his life. An early passion for painting appalled his father and at least two of his brothers, who gave him a beating for his secular heresy. In 1909, a small sum from his mother financed his departure to art school, which he attended briefly in Minsk and then for three years in Vilnius. There, he subsisted on modest patronage from a local doctor. At the age of twenty, in 1913, he emigrated with a fellow-artist to Paris and settled in a decrepit building—a warren of scruffy studios—in Montparnasse….
Then came the war. The show ends with heartbreaking, scrappy little paintings that were all that Soutine could muster while moving from place to place west of Paris, hiding after the Germans occupied the city, in June of 1940. Stomach troubles, undoubtedly exacerbated by fear, became dire. In the summer of 1943, friends smuggled him by a circuitous route to a hospital in Paris, where he underwent emergency surgery for perforated ulcers. He died soon afterward, at the age of fifty, and was buried in Montparnasse Cemetery.

Jewish painter Chaim Soutine was an avant-garde artist of the 20th century, a major contributor to the expressionist art movement in Paris. He died on August 9, 1943, of health complications from living in hiding when France came under German occupation.
An often-forgotten story, Soutine was a victim of the Shoah.
Soutine I Kossoff curator James Russell talks about the exhibition and why it is so important for everyone including young people, to visit art galleries and explore the art world.
We are open all Bank Holiday weekend 11am - 5pm.

Chaïm Soutine (1893-1943) was an artist from what is now Belarus who lived in great poverty as a Jewish emigrant in Paris. He created impressive paintings with explosions of colour, form distortions and vigorous brushstrokes. He found a trusted friend in Amedeo Modigliani.
His works show portraits of cooks and bellboys, landscapes and animal carcasses that symbolise pain and death. Despite his breakthrough as an artist, he remained an outsider. His intense, disturbing style reflects the torn attitude to life at the time.

Matthew Wong (b. 1984, Toronto, Canada; d. 2019, Edmonton, Canada) was a self-taught Canadian painter whose works invoke art historical precedents that range from ink wash literati painting, to the sweeping brushstrokes of Chaim Soutine and Vincent Van Gogh, to the intuitive mark-making of abstract expressionism. Working alternately in oils and watercolors, Wong’s compositions are known for their manipulation of planar space and striking contrasts between wet and dry brushwork. His colorful, dappled vignettes of imaginary landscapes and half-remembered interiors, in his words, “activate nostalgia, both personal and collective.”

⚠️CHAIM SOUTINE
(1893–1943)
Chaim Soutine, a poor Jewish boy from a Russian village, was withdrawn from childhood, but he found a way to express his emotions through painting.
In 1913, Soutine moved to Paris and settled in La Ruche (the “Beehive”). The terrible poverty and meagre food severely damaged his health.
But in Paris, he also found true friends — one of them was Modigliani.
They were complete opposites. Modigliani was handsome, sociable, and well-educated, while Soutine was sullen, introverted, and somewhat awkward with words. Everyone wondered about their unlikely friendship, but it was genuine.
On the day of his death, Modigliani said to his agent Zborowski: “I am at my end, but I leave you Soutine.” For Chaim, the loss of his friend was a devastating blow.
In 1922, Soutine’s life changed dramatically with the arrival of the American collector Dr. Albert Barnes, who became deeply interested in his work and bought almost all of his paintings.
One morning, Chaim Soutine woke up incredibly famous in America — without even knowing it yet.
Because of his fragile health, his life was cut short in 1943, in Nazi-occupied Paris. But his work, suffused with pain, lives on forever.
