Australian sports correspondent Danika Mason made headlines during the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics when a live cross to Channel Nine’s Today show went viral for the wrong reasons. While reporting from snowy northern Italy, Mason’s speech became noticeably slurred and unfocused — with viewers hearing unusual remarks about coffee prices and even iguanas amid her sports update — sparking widespread attention online and across social media.
The following day, Mason took responsibility on-air and apologized to viewers, admitting she “shouldn’t have had a drink” before the broadcast. She explained that extreme cold, high altitude and not having eaten dinner likely contributed to her condition, and stressed that her behaviour was below the professional standard she sets for herself. Mason thanked those who reached out with supportive messages and voiced her embarrassment over the incident.
Today show hosts, including Karl Stefanovic and Jayne Azzopardi, publicly backed Mason, describing her as a hardworking and respected journalist and encouraging audiences not to judge her by a single moment. Even Australia’s Prime Minister chimed in, suggesting exhaustion from travel may have played a role in the unusual live segment.
The episode has since become a talking point in media circles, highlighting the challenges reporters face when covering live international events — especially in harsh weather conditions — and underscoring the importance of accountability and transparency in journalism.
Channel 9 star Danika Mason has used her first appearance since live crosses in which she slurred her speech at the Olympics went viral, saying she is "embarrassed" and "shouldn't have had a drink".

Today in New England's @amandacrawfordtv returns today from maternity leave - welcome back!
Hoda Kotb returned to the “Today” show Monday as Savannah Guthrie remains in Arizona as the search for her missing mother, Nancy Guthrie, enters its second week.
Kotb, who left NBC in January 2025 after 26 years with the network, filled in alongside Craig Melvin.
The temporary return comes after Guthrie scrapped plans to travel to Milan to cover the Winter Olympics for NBC. Guthrie and Melvin were also scheduled to attend the Games but canceled.
Kotb added, “Paramount through all of this, Savannah and her family are our top priority in addition to that, there is also a job to do.”
