In Morocco it was almost the same price for a private driver, riads, and food as it was just for hotels I booked myself. Instead we paid $850 each for a five- day private tour around Morocco. It was really fun to have a private driver as we got to stop any time we wished, which we did a lot. The down side of road travel (for busses too) was constantly getting stopped at checkpoints every couple of hours. They had speed cameras and if you were speeding even 3 km/hrs over the limit you would get a ticket. They were trying to assign tickets for tourist vehicles, so the driver's papers would be checked constantly. I get the impression this wasn't as much about safety as it was about making money off of the tour operators. Either way, we wouldn't have wanted to be driving with about 8+ checkpoints per day! And we would definitely recommend more than 5 days for this tour. There were two 9+ hour days of driving, which was a lot!
