The smallest gumboot chiton I have ever seen!! Can you tell I love them... I’ve been trying to find a baby one for SO LONG! Technically this one is more of an adolescent so l am still on the search for an even smaller one. I love finding gumboots in the tidepools. Often times they are flopped over, likely because they can’t handle their own weight during low tides.

What happens when you stand on the world’s most venomous fish, the estuary stonefish? ⁉️
Stonefish have 13 dorsal spines, each connected to two venom sacs. When stepped on, these spines inject venom made up of powerful proteins and toxins that affect the nervous system, muscles, and cardiovascular system. It’s a venom designed to cause intense, overwhelming pain.
Thankfully, in 1959, an antivenom was developed to treat stonefish stings. It was one of the earliest marine animal antivenoms and has greatly reduced the risk of death from stonefish envenomation.

🎬 The March of the Hermit Crabs 🌙🐚
We thought we were heading down for a peaceful moonlit beach walk.
Instead… the path was moving.
Hundreds of hermit crabs. All marching in the same direction like we’d stumbled into a tiny crustacean parade we were definitely not invited to.
Flashlights on. Eyes wide.
Me? Walking like I was in a slow-motion obstacle course, placing each step with Olympic precision so I didn’t accidentally evict anyone from their borrowed shell.
Fun fact: hermit crabs are nocturnal little night owls. They come out after dark because the cooler, more humid air keeps them from drying out — and the darkness helps them avoid predators while they forage for food… and occasionally upgrade their real estate.
And the shells!
Every single one different.
Some cute. Some questionable. Some giving full “don’t touch me” energy. 😅
We thought it was wildly cool.
You might think it’s nightmare fuel.
Either way… nature doesn’t care. It just keeps marching.
Would you have kept walking?

During this week’s beachcombing survey, I came across something you don’t see every day, several mottled sea hares washed up along the shoreline. Sea hares are large marine sea slugs that look more like something from a sci-fi movie than a Texas beach. With their soft bodies, ear-like rhinophores, and occasional purple ink defense, they’re some of the most fascinating invertebrates in our coastal waters. Watch this episode of Beachcombing with Jace Tunnell to see what is going with these creatures washing up along the Texas coast.
Sometimes you need a heavy hammer and nails to unlock the best flavor nature has to offer. 🔨🐟
