Day one with this three year old gelding. He sure is a silly little guy. He was pretty tight and bound up in the beginning but he loosened up and moved out nice by the end. Had to use a britchen on him because he is overweight and my saddle was wanting to slip over his head. people will spend months desensitizing their colts & be so PROUD when they stand quiet no matter WHAT they’re flagging him with… Desensitization is used to create a “perception” of control. but when done wrong, your horse isn’t controlled, he’s dissociated That’s never been my strategy In fact, my young colts handle themselves better in new experiences than most “broke” horses. And there’s a very clear explanation as to why my colts are so safe, calm & confident even in new environments …without ever desensitizing 🙌🏼 → I taught them how to self-regulate their NS Your horse will default to survival instincts unless you teach him how not to. I start my colts in a way that works WITH their NS, not over-riding it. It’s not ab killing their NS response… it’s ab teaching them how to find safety in their body after they’ve become alert ab something. You don’t need numb them out. You need to teach them they can let go instead of escalate into a meltdown. → I taught them how to soften & think under pressure If you don’t put in the time to teach your colt what to do under pressure, you will have a horse that is always tight & trying to escape from pressure bc he doesn’t believe he has control When you flood a horse with pressure, he doesn’t believe he can escape so he internalizes fear. What you get is inconsistent results & a horse that complies, but doesn’t want to → I taught them how to embrace uncertainty of new environments I have never been afraid to take my colts to new places, to ride off alone from the herd, or be introduced to new things like a rope, dummy sled, calves etc. Bc they are confident learning new things. How? I know how to lead them from feeling insecure to SAFE. How much you need to desensitize your horse is determined by how much control you don’t have 🫣 If you want your horse to turn out soft & willing to learn from you… then you need to know how to regulate their NS, soften & think under pressure. this is exactly what I’m teaching inside my 7 Day Colt Prep Challenge ✅ Comment “PREP” to get access to the pre-work dropping soon, which will have you upleveling how confident you feel in starting your colt immediately

Yes, we do start leading our foals within a week alongside mom. They have some fun with it at first but figure it out quickly. It makes everyone safer in the long run for them to be comfortable being haltered and led. If they need medical attention, if they get out on the property, or if they just need to come inside on a colder night, we know they will be easy to handle. #foal #ponies #horse #coltstarting
