Now, 50 years after that first commercial journey from Heathrow to Bahrain, former pilots reflect on the thrill and precision of flying it.
Cruising at the edge of space, twice the speed of sound - 1,350mph, a mile every two and a half seconds - Concorde moved faster than a bullet.
In just over three hours, it carried passengers from London to New York, redefining the very idea of long‑haul travel.

How Fast Was Concorde — Really? 🚀✈️
Most airliners cruise at about Mach 0.78–0.85. That’s roughly 800–900 km/h. Fast enough to cross oceans efficiently.
Then came Concorde.
The Concorde cruised at Mach 2.02 — about 2,150 km/h at altitude. That’s more than twice the speed of today’s typical jetliners. 🔥
Let’s compare:
✈️ Boeing 737 / Airbus A320
Cruise: ~840 km/h
✈️ Boeing 777 / Airbus A350
Cruise: ~900 km/h
Cruise speed of the A380:
Mach 0.85 — about 900 km/h
🚀 Concorde
Cruise: ~2,150 km/h
On a London–New York route:
Normal airliner: ~7–8 hours
Concorde: ~3.5 hours
It literally outran the rotation of the Earth. On westbound flights, passengers sometimes arrived earlier local time than they departed. Time zones felt optional. 🌍
At Mach 2, the aircraft skin heated up to about 120–130°C due to air friction. The fuselage actually expanded several centimeters during cruise. Physics does not play gently at twice the speed of sound.
But speed came at a cost:

• Limited seating
• Sonic boom restrictions over land.
Modern jets focus on efficiency. Concorde focused on velocity.
Most airliners optimize economics. Concorde optimized audacity.
Supersonic passenger travel wasn’t just fast — it bent time, heated metal, and redefined what “long haul” meant.

When Concorde took off, you didn’t just hear it… you felt it.
At departure, the Olympus 593 engines — especially with afterburners engaged — could push noise levels close to 130 decibels near the runway. That’s in the range of a military jet at close distance. Windows rattled. Car alarms sometimes triggered. Conversations? Impossible.
Concorde’s power came from four turbojet engines designed for sustained supersonic cruise at Mach 2. To achieve that performance, fuel burn and raw thrust were priorities — and noise was the tradeoff.
It was loud. It was unapologetic.
And it was one of the most iconic sounds in aviation history.

Cruising at over Mach 2.04 (≈2,180 km/h), Concorde could cross the Atlantic in under 3.5 hours, cutting flight time in half compared to modern airliners.
Powered by four Rolls-Royce/Snecma Olympus 593 engines, it was one of the only passenger aircraft capable of sustained supersonic flight.

There are flight decks… and then there was Concorde.
The first airliner to carry 100 passengers at Mach 2.
Not just crossing the Atlantic, but outrunning the rotation of the Earth.
G-BBDG, “Delta Golf,” was the first British production Concorde. She wasn’t used commercially, her job was even more critical. Certification. Route proving. Demonstration tours around the world to show airlines that Mach 2 wasn’t fantasy… it was reality.
663 flights.
374 supersonic.
5,500 hours at the very edge of what was possible.
And at the heart of it all? @brooklandsmuseum , where nearly a third of every Concorde began life before final assembly in Filton or Toulouse. From motor racing circuit to supersonic pioneer, that patch of Surrey tarmac has always had speed in its DNA.
I’ve flown every Airbus side-stick from the A320 through to the A350, but the Concorde cockpit remains something special analogue precision, reheat, intake ramps, fuel transfer for CG control at Mach 2… this wasn’t just flying. This was managing physics.
Delta Golf now rests at Brooklands Museum, just south of Heathrow. She no longer climbs through FL600… but step onto that flight deck and you can almost hear the Olympus engines spooling.
Some aircraft move people.
Some aircraft move history.
Concorde did both.

Le Concorde volait à Mach 2, soit 2 200 km/h. À 18 000 mètres d’altitude, ses passagers voyaient la courbure de la Terre. Il était tellement rapide qu’on arrivait à New York avant l’heure à laquelle on était parti de Paris.
Seuls 20 exemplaires ont été construits. Un billet coûtait 8 000 euros l’aller-retour. Il brûlait 25 600 litres de kérosène par heure, trois fois plus qu’un Boeing 747.
Le 25 juillet 2000, une lamelle de métal de 43 cm sur la piste a tout changé. 113 morts. Et en 2003, le Concorde a été retiré pour toujours.
