Surveillance pricing is digital pickpocketing. On Monday the NDP is proposing legislation to ban it, it'll be up to the Ford conservatives to support us and pass it. #surveillancepricing #digitalpickpocketing #onpoli #consumerprotection #consumerrights
Spotting a scam before it’s too late is becoming a crucial skill, especially with AI-driven schemes popping up everywhere. If something feels off, trusting that instinct is the first step toward staying safe.
Fortunately, there’s a powerful, free resource designed to help verify those red flags: the BBB Scam Tracker. This tool allows anyone to research potential fraud by zip code, industry, or specific business type. It’s an invaluable way to cross-reference experiences, warn loved ones, and stop suspicious operators in their tracks. A little research goes a long way in protecting personal finances and peace of mind.

Tax season brings out the best in people, but unfortunately, it also brings out the worst in scammers. A chilling reminder that scammers are evolving, using high-pressure tactics, aggression, and urgent demands—like requests for gift cards or wire transfers—to target unsuspecting taxpayers. If you get a call threatening arrest or immediate payment, stop and think: the IRS and government agencies will never ask you to pay in untraceable ways.
With the rise of AI, these imposters are getting even more sophisticated. Whether it’s phishing links or deepfake-style social engineering, staying vigilant is the best defense. Remember, if it sounds urgent, emotional, or demands an unconventional payment method, it’s a major red flag. Stay protected and keep your hard-earned money safe this year.

This week, our Capitol Response Team returned to Sacramento for its second Day of Action of 2026!
Our team met with 24 Senate offices, including Senate Leadership and members of key committees, to voice support for SB 876 (Padilla) and SB 878 (Perez).
Both bills aim to stop unfair homeowner’s insurance claims practices after disasters like the LA Wildfires, with SB 878 extending protections to any household fire. Each bill includes strong penalties to deter these harmful practices. As the hearings approach, we’re lifting the voices of Californians and reminding lawmakers how these bills strengthen affordability and consumer protections.

You could actually sue a company for millions just because of a small mistake on a snack package. In Japan, the image on the packaging must match the real size of the product exactly. If a chocolate bar is 2 inches long, the picture on the wrapper must also be 2 inches. Even the smallest difference is considered misleading because inaccurate branding is completely banned.

On December 30, a federal judge ordered the administration to continue funding the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the federal agency created after the 2008 financial crisis to protect consumers from abusive practices by banks and other financial companies.
The ruling blocks the administration’s latest attempt to cut off funding for the CFPB and marks a new escalation in a broader legal and political fight over the agency’s future.
For more than a decade, the CFPB has forced financial institutions to return billions of dollars to consumers, rewritten opaque mortgage and credit card rules, and given ordinary Americans a way to challenge errors and abuses by trillion-dollar companies. Critics inside the administration have argued the agency is illegitimate or should be dismantled; supporters say its independence is precisely what makes it effective.
Courts are now being asked to decide whether an administration can effectively neutralize a congressionally created watchdog—not by repealing it through Congress, but by refusing to fund or operate it.
The outcome of that fight could reshape consumer protections across the country. Here’s how.

Working to strengthen consumer protections for Hawai’i residents caught in timeshare traps
Too many local families are locked into contracts they can’t escape—while some companies charge thousands upfront and deliver nothing. House Resolution 154 would study these issues and push for stronger safeguards.
This is about protecting our community, especially our kupuna, from predatory practices and unfair financial burdens.

Imagine giving a company your genetic information the most personal data you own only to find out it could be sold to big pharma without your full consent.
In this Senate hearing, executives admitted that customer DNA data would be transferred during a company sale. While users were told they could “delete” their data, fine print revealed something disturbing:
even after deleting an account, genetic information could still be retained.
Lawmakers called it out as misleading and dangerous, warning that once genetic data is shared, it can never truly be taken back.
This isn’t just about privacy it’s about trust, consent, and who really owns your DNA.
💬 “There is nothing more personal than your genes… and they turned it into a product.”
