Streaming just got more expensive again.
@netflix has raised prices across all its subscription plans, for the second time in just over a year.
The ad-supported plan now costs $8.99 (up from $7.99), the standard plan rises to $19.99 (from $17.99), and the premium tier jumps to $26.99 (from $24.99). Overall, that’s about an 11% increase across the board.
New users will see the updated prices immediately, while existing subscribers will be notified before the changes take effect on their accounts.
Netflix says the increase reflects its growing investment in content, with plans to spend up to $20 billion in 2026 as it expands into live events and new formats. But with frequent price hikes in recent years, many users are starting to question how much streaming is really worth.

The real streaming competition isn’t Netflix vs Disney.
It’s Netflix vs YouTube.
Both are fighting to become the default app on the living room screen.
Live content, ad systems, interactivity, and habit loops define the next phase of competition.
So what???
Because whoever wins the default viewing behavior wins the long-term monetization game.

Netflix never buffers but YouTube does… WHY?? 😳
It’s all about CDN + caching.
Netflix streams from your city.

Netflix does not just have fast servers. They built an entire content delivery system called Open Connect that puts their content physically close to you.
Follow and Comment "PDF" for detailed notes.
Here is how their streaming works step by step:
1. Content Preparation (Encoding)
Every movie and show is encoded into hundreds of different formats and quality levels. Different resolutions (480p, 720p, 1080p, 4K), different bitrates, different codecs. This is done ahead of time, not in real time.
2. Open Connect Appliances (OCAs)
Netflix places physical servers (called OCAs) inside ISP data centers around the world. Your ISP probably has a Netflix server in its own building. When you hit play, the video comes from a server in your city, not from some data center in the US.
3. Adaptive Bitrate Streaming (ABR)
Your internet speed fluctuates. Netflix's player detects this in real time and switches quality accordingly. Speed drops? It drops to 720p. Speed recovers? It bumps back to 4K. You barely notice.
4. Chunk Based Delivery
The video is split into small chunks (a few seconds each). Your player downloads the next chunk while you watch the current one. This is why you can start watching almost instantly.
5. Predictive Caching
Netflix analyzes what is trending in your region and pre loads that content onto nearby OCAs before users even press play. A new season drops at midnight? The files are already on your local server.
6. Microservices Backend
The streaming itself is handled by OCAs, but everything else (recommendations, user profiles, billing, search) runs on AWS using hundreds of microservices. If the recommendation service goes down, you can still watch your show.
Interview Tip: Netflix is a popular system design question. Focus on CDN (Open Connect), ABR, and chunk based delivery as the three pillars. Most candidates just say "use a CDN" without explaining how video streaming actually works.

Netflix didn’t launch a console.
They turned 325 million TVs into one.
Using computer vision and smartphones as controllers, Netflix is quietly building living room party gaming — not to compete with PlayStation, but to build household habits.
So what???
Because when families play together every Friday night, cancellation stops being a content decision.
It becomes a behavioral decision.
That’s not gaming strategy.
That’s retention architecture.

Netflix is on a treadmill that never stops.
Spent 17 billion on content in 2024. Next year will spend more.
Can NEVER stop.
Why? Old content gets stale. Stop producing, subscribers leave within a year.
Plus competing with TikTok, YouTube, video games, everything that wants attention.
For years Netflix LOST money. How?
DEBT. Borrowed 15 billion selling bonds. Burned cash to grow subscribers.
2024: Finally profitable.
277 million subscribers, 15 dollars per month equals 50B revenue.
Minus 17B content, minus 10B expenses equals 20B profit.
But can't slow spending. Disney Plus, HBO Max, Apple TV, Amazon all spending billions.
If Netflix reduces spending, competitors win. Subscribers leave.
Spending is mandatory.
Global scale helps. 190 countries. Korean show becomes global hit. Spreads costs across 277M subscribers.
But hit rate terrible. Only 20% of originals succeed. 80% fail.
For every Stranger Things, 10 shows canceled after season one.
Recent moves: Password crackdown, ad-supported tier, price increases.
Bull case: 277M subscribers, unbeatable scale.
Bear case: Treadmill unsustainable, competitors match spending.
Audit your usage. Barely watching? Cancel and rotate subscriptions.

How does Netflix stream videos without buffering? 🎥
Netflix doesn’t send every video from one central server. ❌
Instead, it uses something called a Content Delivery Network (CDN). ✅
A CDN is a network of thousands of servers placed around the world. 🖥️ 🌍
When you press play, the video is delivered from a server that is geographically closer to you.
This reduces the distance data has to travel and makes the video load much faster. 🚀
That’s why Netflix can stream smoothly even for millions of users at the same time.
