Australia's most colourful stink bugs! Tectocoris diopthalmus, a type of jewel bug found on the east coast of Australia :) Aren't these just the most amazing insects you've ever seen?! These walking rainbows are called cotton harlequin bugs, they're a type of shield bug from the jewel bug family, Scutelleridae. Bugs from that family are also known for their maternal behaviours, with the female guarding her bright pink eggs until they hatch! You can tell the males and females apart typically by their colouration, with females being mostly yellow or orange with some blue spots, and the males being mostly blue and red. However there are some exceptions where some males are mostly yellow but with more blue than is typically seen on females. It's also been found that across their habitat range depending on temperature their colouration varies, with more blues seen in cooler regions. As they grow, each nymphal stage varies in colour too. All of these factors result in a gorgeous rainbow of bugs! I was curious and read a paper about how they make their shimmery colours, expecting it to be like other insects with tiny indents, but instead these bugs use a mixture of pigments and structural colours. This is achieved through hard cuticle exoskeleton is made up of tiny layers, epicuticular layers, that let light bounce and reflect, kind of like how a CD is shiny and rainbow! These bugs do have tiny conical structures called microtubules but it was determined that this isn't for colour, but for waterproofing. Just rolling onto your feed with Crockett, the mud-wallowing black rhino! 🦏 Wallowing in mud helps him control his temperature and keep cool on these warm Texas days. When the mud dries, it also protects his skin from the sun’s rays and pesky bugs! Our southern black rhinos now alternate between their main habitat yard (the one you can see!) and additional outdoor and indoor spaces (behind the scenes!). As is natural for their species, Crockett and Muke typically prefer to be in their own spaces while remaining in close proximity to one another. Their separate outdoor yards neighbor, which allows them to spend time together along their shared border!

My precious is ready to find a new home. This old friend loves to collect cool bugs that he finds along his walk in the forest.
