They’re in the TREES! 🐍 Although we generally think of copperheads snaking their way through dead leaves in the fall, these snakes often find themselves in some interesting places! On a hike earlier this summer I came across something I did not expect to see: the bright shiny underbelly of a copperhead… well over a foot above my head! Although generally copperheads lead a terrestrial lifestyle, they are capable of climbing somewhat well in pursuit of prey or places to hide! Perhaps a tasty lizard or insect thought it was safe in this small canopy and the copperhead took advantage of an unsuspecting meal. It’s also possible this was a great area to soak up warmth during the day and that’s what drew the attention of this reptile. Regardless of the reason, this is one of my favorite moments I’ve had. It illustrates so well how much we can be surprised by the natural world, and even someone like me who spends a lot of time looking for creatures, can always find something I’ve never seen before! While copperheads are a venomous snake species, they can be admired from a distance and in my opinion are some of the most attractive snakes to encounter here in the United States! A copperhead snake blends right in with leaves in Louisiana. ⁣ ⁣ Copperheads are common in the eastern and southern US and they’d rather hide than bother humans. So if you see one, give it space and admire its camouflage from a distance.

This snake is mistaken for being venomous more than any other in the U.S. The Common Watersnake (Nerodia sipedon), found across the eastern United States, is a highly aquatic, non-venomous species often confused with cottonmouths and copperheads due to its thick body and banded pattern. Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix) This venomous snake is one of the most vilified species in the US. They can be identified by the pattern of “Hersey kiss” shaped marks along the side. Most people who are unfamiliar with snakes misidentify all manner of harmless snakes as copperheads and end up killing them. Ironically, when they actually encounter a copperhead, they are unable to identify it correctly. As far as venomous snakebites go, copperhead bites are not that serious (especially compared to some of the bites of venomous snakes in places like India). There are stories of old American herpetologists who used to take a few swigs of whisky and sleep off copperhead bites. That’s definitely not advisable medical aid, but what I’m saying is that there are worse snakes to be bitten by than copperheads. Like most snakes, they are shy and timid, but can get defensive if faced with a threat. We got peafowls for our homestead for one main reason in the beginning - poisonous snakes. Our wooded homestead is home to copperheads and rattlesnakes, and with a young child and a dog, that made us a little uneasy. We’d read some blogs online that peafowls were great at spotting movement and sounding the alarm. Also they are very protective against their territory and snakes are their number one enemy in the wild. We raised our chicks into adults and kept them in an enclosed area for the first 6ish months so they’d know where home base was. Eventually we tried free ranging them. Free ranging didn’t work out for us. We actually lost one of our hens. So we built them a secure aviary. We now have a different purpose for them on the homestead. An eastern copperhead presumably in ambush position, or perhaps just flattening itself underneath the warmth of the tin, or both! Not sure. What I do know is that I had to always see rodent burrows and mice scuttling about whenever I lifted this tin. That was until the copperheads started showing up of course. #herping #copperhead
