I’ll admit, I gave copywork the side eye when I started homeschooling. I wondered how just copying what someone else wrote was useful. I assumed it was a waste of time. Well, I was wrong. Here are just a few reasons why it’s useful: 👉🏻 Stress free writing practice. It allows the child to focus on letter formation and sentence structure without figuring out what to write. 👉🏻 The child is repeatedly seeing what a sentence looks like and getting to write them. 👉🏻 The child is immersed in grammar, punctuation and spelling without forcing those skills individually. 👉🏻 The child gets to read and write more complex sentences regularly to improve their own learning thinking. Copywork has been one of those unsung heroes in our homeschool. #charlottemasonmondays It doesn’t get a whole lot of attention or love. However, for the reasons below, copywork holds a place in our homeschool rhythm for our elementary and middle schoolers: ✏️ Habit Training: Copywork practices not only formation of letters, but builds a habit of thoughtful penmanship. Especially in these younger years, I’m trying to build a habit of attention to detail and self motivated quality work. ✏️ Reinforcing concepts: Writing things down has proven to help commit things to memory. When they have copywork, they are spelling and using grammar correctly. For subjects like history, science, or geography, they are reinforcing definitions or historical facts as they write them down. ✏️ Independent learning: Copywork is pretty much work that can be completed independently, which frees me to work with other children during that time. ✏️ Purposeful: Using purposeful text in literature, Scripture, or science has been a bonus. If we’re going to spend time in copywork, I love making sure it is something worth their attention. Summer mornings with some @thechildrenstradition rhythms getting back in order. We’re pretty consistent on readings, but adding back narrations, copywork and Latin are my focus this week. While I don’t post my kiddos often, I wanted to share what we do because I think the idea of reading and narrating when I first started our year was hard to understand. It’s not measurable, but it’s the habit of attention at work. 🤍 So, wanted to drop in a glimpse for anyone else who may be struggling and wondering how that may look (even if it’s just a tiny snippet). I love that it fits perfectly above their workbooks, doesn’t take up a ton of room on the table, the slanted top makes it easier to write, and the storage underneath! 👏🏻 Comment “whiteboard” and I’ll send you the link! ✨ *It comes with one dry erase marker & eraser. Any dry erase markers work on it and I buy washable make up remover pads from the Dollar Store as erasers too.
