We ran a simple A/B test: A - A $197 product with a high-end sales letter and top copywriters We drove 100 visitors to it. We got 1% conversion = $197 in revenue. Good, but not great. B - We took the most valuable thing out of the product (a free CD offer 💿 in this case) And gave it away for free (+ shipping). The full product became the upsell. The results with the same 100 visitors: 8 people took the free offer and 2 of them bought the upsell. We doubled revenue, grew our customer list by 8x and all with the same traffic. As we kept testing, the results held. We ended up calling this a Black Box Funnel. Lead with your best stuff, not your pitch. And 10 years later, in a world where everyone’s fighting for attention with aggressive tactics and hard sells... this approach is still relevant. Give first. Earn the right to offer more.
