Severely Unstable
When I met a doctor from my surgeons ortho team, he evaluated my Achilles and my ankle. The Thompson test showed a positive for full rupture. He then proceeded to evaluate my ankle and concluded that it was severely unstable and might require additional surgery.
I had to stop him, HOLD UP, I said. I did not land on or twist my ankle. The martial art that I do, I’ve actually trained for my ankle to move into these extreme positions. He looked at my right ankle, looked confused but still wrote down the possibility of ankle surgery.
An old fracture did show up in the xray, circa Phoenix wushu nationals when I thought I sprained my ankle, wrapped it up and kept competing 3 more forms. But no additional surgery thank god!
And here I am today, a year and two months post surgery for Achilles tendon rupture. Starting to get back iconic pubus like @ivo_arsts and @loandrouard

Strength and mobility shouldn’t exist in separate worlds.
True mobility is being able to control deep positions, not just passively stretch into them.
In this movement I’m transitioning from a Cossack squat into a pistol balance before reopening the hip and returning to the Cossack.
That means the hips have to be able to:
sink deep into one side
stabilize while the other leg lifts
control the transition into a single-leg balance
then reopen the hip without losing position
It’s a combination of strength, balance, and mobility working together.
This is an advanced movement, but the principle behind it applies to everyone:
Mobility improves the most when you build strength inside the ranges you’re trying to open.
If you want to move better, squat deeper, and build hips that actually feel strong and capable, send me a message and I’ll help you figure out what might be limiting you.
And if you know someone working on their hip mobility, share this with them and follow for more ways to build strength and freedom in your movement.
It’s myth that ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’. But what makes you a warrior is having the strength to push past limits AND having the awareness to step back if a challenge or obstacle has turned toxic
🔥 ADVANCED HIP MOBILITY 🔥
✅ Save if you like new hip drills!!
How is your hip & ankle mobility? How is your hip mobility and hip strength from END ranges.... some of the hardest points?
🔹 Hips have to stay mobile, hip flexors and glutes have to be strong. Sufficient ankle dorsiflexion and hip flexion are needed for those deep squat positions. The femoral head needs to rotate well inside to make movement sequencing smooth.
⬇️ These are some of my favorite drills to maintain this area!
1️⃣ Cossack Squats: Deep and controlled lateral lunge, progressively lower, stay in control.
2️⃣ Knee Drop + Hover: hip internal rotation to a deep press up through the heel as if you’re about to stand.
3️⃣ 90/90 Fold & Rotate: chest up and tall spine, feel a stretch in the front glute and maybe the back hip. Elevate hips if unable and stay out of pain.
4️⃣ SLR & clear: great way to work on quad and hip flexor strength. Don’t let the knee buckle.
⚠️ None of these should be painful, but they are advanced! I use these as deep mobility options and a way to test end-range strength.

🔥 ADVANCED HIP DRILLS 🔥
🤔 How's your hip mobility? How's your hip strength? How is your hip mobility and hip strength from END ranges.... aka some of the hardest points?
👉🏼 Try these out if they're pain free and put your hips to the test!
1️⃣ Cossack Squat with Knee Drop: Deep and controlled hip flexion with a controlled knee drop to test internal rotation. *aggravating for labral issues.. avoid this if it hurts!*
👉🏼MODS: put a couple yoga blocks under you to make it easier.
2️⃣ 90/90 Lifts: Clear something with the whole hip and move it to a new position. This mobility is important for life... whether you're running hurdles or getting out of a car.
3️⃣ SLR to Pistol Squat: This is hard, but it's a real fun test to see how well you can control your QUAD to keep a straight knee up and away as you drive through the heel with the other to stand.
👉🏼 Trouble with some of these? Check out my Hip Mobility & Activation post for some drills to work on it.

Here’s how to do the cossack squat! It may just look like a lateral lunge, but its not. Your toe is up and you go much deeper than your lateral lunge.
