Johnson, Vermont—population 1,400—in Lamoille Country is a locals’ town, one with community chicken suppers, a little free library, a cafe that acts as a gathering place, and a hub for outdoor recreation. It’s also home to Northern Vermont University and is located at the confluence of the Lamoille and Gihon Rivers with a backdrop of the Sterling and Butternut Mountains. So how should a visitor to Johnson spend the afternoon? Stroll downtown and stop into @butternutmountainfarm for a wide variety of Vermont-made treats, products, and even maple sugaring equipment. Drop in next door at @johnsonwoolenmills for outdoor gear and their renowned blankets and flannels - they’ve been a Vermont staple since 1862. Before hitting the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail for a walk or bike, eat a delicious lunch (or coffee and a treat) at Jenna’s Coffee House. Try the Kale Salad, BLT, or the Reuben. Next, head about a half-mile outside of town to @bikelamoille, where you can rent a bicycle or e-bike or go on a tour along the 93-mile Lamoille Valley Rail Trail. Ride on the scenic, flat rail trail, taking in the rural Vermont sights and sounds. It’s a good wknd to plan a future trip ⬇️ 🍁Littleton, NH: just north of great hiking is an ADORABLE town with great everything. Separate Reel coming soon. 🍁Crawford Notch State Park: drive on RT 302 for gorgeous views and multiple places to pull over. I like the quick hike up Mount Willard for views of the notch road + valley.  🍁Arethusa Falls: this hike is also off RT 302 - it’s not long to get to the falls but you could make the hike longer and do the Frankenstein loop which is super fun. 🍁Mount Morgan: near Holderness, NH with views of Squam Lake. Some vertical ladder stuff and a crawl through a cave. One of my favorites ever. 🍁Artist Bluff: In New Hampshire’s Franconia notch off 93. TOURIST CITY. A super quick hike with AMAZING views. Go on a week day to avoid crowds. 🍁Woodstock, VT: Quintessential fall VT town - not far from Boston. 🍁Elmore Mountain: In northern Vermont this hike gets you 2,608 feet higher + a fire tower at the top for AMAZING views. Could hike while in Stowe. 🍁Brattleboro, VT: Art museum, glass blowing, cute downtown, covered bridge, local shopping. I like this town. Wantastiquet Mountain is a good hike. 🍁Stowe, VT: though always recommended this town deserves to be on the list. Definitely drive up RT 108, the Notch Road, if it snows they close it until spring so double check. Sterling Pond or Stowe Pinnacle are top hikes. 🍁Northeast Kingdom: this area in VT is rural. But great. My weird picks: @breadandpuppet & @museumofeverydaylife_ & Dog Chapel at @stephenhuneck gallery also Mount Pisgah and Lake Willoughby. 🍁Acadia Nat’l Park: In the fall season you’re allowed to hike to Precipice Trail which is closed in summer for bird reasons. 🍁Northampton, MA: Hikes nearby, my one recommendation is @hungryghostbread I dream about it. 🍁Bash Bish Falls, MA: some will argue it’s in NY.  🍁Borderland State Park, MA: in Easton! This place is cool and has Hollywood history. 🍁Montague Bookmill, MA: They also have a cafe - I also loved Turners Falls, a town nearby. . . . #newenglandtravel #newenglandfall #falladventures #falltravel
