Tonight we are recognising and celebrating the longest serving on-call firefighter in @dwfirerescue Keith Prince, as he retires from Cranborne Fire Station after 47 years service. 🚒 Thank you to the whole village who came out to congratulate Keith!
Keith joined Cranborne in October 1977, for a time serving alongside his Father and brother. Some career highlights for Keith include spending two nights at the EBN Magid fire in Portland harbour in January 1986 and attending the Wareham Forest wildfire in 2020.
Aside from incidents, Keith was one of the FRS volunteers who set up the Salisbury vaccination centre at the start of the COVID pandemic. He also supported @swas_ft with ambulance driving during this time 🚑
CFO Andy Cole commented at Keith’s presentation, “Keith’s 47 years of service is an incredible achievement. Being an on-call firefighter isn’t just a job, it’s a commitment. Keith has been there for his community, balancing the demands of family, work and responding to emergencies without hesitation for almost five decades.”
“His dedication and attendance at some really significant incidents over the years has made a real difference and his professionalism has set a standard I know many others have admired, and aspired to match. On behalf of DWFRS, the people of Cranborne and the wider communities of Dorset, Wiltshire and neighbouring Hampshire, I want to thank Keith and his family for their unwavering support. We wish him a long and happy retirement, with plenty of time to enjoy life - without the interruption of a pager!”

Cranborne, a small village, rich in history including naughty monks, revengeful princesses, ruined castles, smugglers and highwaymen. The landscape is filled with wild wood, spiritual burial mounds, Iron Age settlement, and Neolithic mystery, all of which is the playground for a plethora of wildlife. It has all been preserved thanks to the first conservationist – William the Conqueror, his Chase Law surviving the centuries and protecting the ancient monuments and darting deer we still encounter today. Follow the little chalk stream of the River Crane through old farms and fields, all part of the Cranborne Chase Farm Cluster, dedicated to care and protect the environment. Cross a Romano British Settlement and medieval deer park before entering in to the deep, dark woods of Burwood. Return with views to the old castle back to the village and the little River Crane.

I’d been looking at the map of Cranborne Chase and searching out the byways and I set out this April morning to cycle some ones I’ve travelled along before but I wanted to add in some new ones. And I wasn’t disappointed…
There’s a restricted byway that leads up from Tollard Royal towards Ashmore where tree branches had arched over towards the hedgerow on the other side creating a ‘magical doorway’. It gives me much joy spotting these natural portals to cycle through.
These old green ways on the Wiltshire/Dorset border up on Cranborne Chase were full of celandines and violets. With several brimstone butterflies flitting around.
I’ve found a byways map of the UK. It could be my next mission to cycle as many as I can….as slowly as I can.
