Perilous Pygmy Pine Parrot? Nope, it’s a Red Crossbill, and those strong feet help them hang on needles, branches, and cones while extracting conifer seeds. This one’s a re-issue in IG’s Reels format.

A male crossbill deftly pried open a pine cone with her beak and ate it.
The cute voices in the background are the chirpings of several crossbills taken separately at the same location.
And the background color is autumn leaves.

Ondanks dat het toen een donkere dag was, toch een aantal kruisbekken kunnen vastleggen.
Even though it was a dark day, I was still able to capture a number of crossbills.

The crossbill is a super interesting bird. Whereas most birds have bills that match like a pair of pliers, the crossbills' are more like a pair of curved scissors. ✂️
Initially, in the 1800’s, French naturalist Buffon believed the beak was “an error and defect of nature” and “a useless deformity.” But since, it has been suggested that the crossing of the bill is not a deformity but rather an adaptation to assist in seed husking.
Evolutionary ecologist Benkman found that crossbills without the hook husked seeds at the same rate as birds with hooked beaks, suggesting that the hook did not evolve for husking purposes. He discovered that when crossbills encountered an unripened cone, those with hooked lower bills were able to “rapidly bite between the cone’s scales, laterally shift the beak to separate the scales, insert their tongue into the crevice and pry out the seed”.
Those without the hook obtained a seed, but required three times as long to do so; meaning this strange deformation is actually a fine tuned adaptation for obtaining seeds.
Benkman also noted that some birds had bills that crossed to the left while others had bills that crossed to the right, just like people, these birds demonstrated right and left-handedness. So, when crossbills hurry from one seed to the next, leaving seeds behind, it seemed likely that different seeds would be left by righties than would by lefties, allowing more birds to persist if there were equal numbers of righties and lefties in a population.

Meet the #LuzonRedCrossbill, the only #Crossbill species found in the #Philippines! Well regarded as a Pine forest specialist across the world, this species is only present on the Cordillera and Zambales mountains of #Luzon where they specialize in Benguet Pine.
Although we did spot the #RedCrossbill on Benguet Pine, they have taken a keen interest in dried sunflowers during our trip to #Benguet 🌻Here’s a short clip of a very bright red male nibbing on Sunflower florets!

Winter in Manitoba is not generally a time for animals to breed. Resources are scarce - many species have migrated and those that remain are often struggling to survive or have slowed their metabolism, perhaps to hibernate or essentially freeze solid.
But two Manitoba bird species are unusual finches known to breed through the winter months! Learn about these birds' special adaptions in this video with Dr. Randy Mooi.

The Scissor-Beaked Genius – Meet the Crossbill!
At first glance, its crossed beak looks broken—
But it’s actually a precision tool made for pine seed feasting!
No other bird can pry open cones like this master forager.
Nature shaped its beak as it grew, twisting it into genius.
Found even in India (hello, Red Crossbill!), it doesn’t migrate far—just where the cones are.
Proof that nature doesn’t make mistakes, only masterpieces.

Espen heard a crossbill on a walk. Camera was already with him. Images made.
That's a habit worth adopting — and Espen is direct about it. Even when photography isn't the plan, the camera comes along. Because the best wildlife encounters don't announce themselves in advance.
But there's a second layer to this story that goes beyond always being ready.
The crossbill is one of the most specialized birds in the forest — its beak has evolved to cross at the tip specifically to pry open pine cones and extract the seeds inside. It's one of nature's most elegant adaptations, and Espen's reaction to it was genuine: "I just love this adaptation."
And it comes with a field sign that anyone can learn to read.
When crossbills have been feeding in an area, they leave evidence on the ground. Cones scattered beneath the trees — not just dropped, but pried apart in a very specific way. The outer scales forced open by that crossed beak, the seed extracted cleanly. Once you know what that looks like, you can identify crossbill activity in an area before you ever see or hear the bird.
That's the full loop of wildlife field craft:
Learn the adaptation. Know the feeding signs. Recognize the call. Have the camera ready.
Each piece of knowledge builds on the others — and together they turn a casual walk into a productive photography session.
