The CCC doesn’t exist because it adds something clinically unique. It exists because of when supervision happens.
In speech-language pathology, a large portion of required supervised clinical experience is pushed after graduation into a post-graduate year.
Most state licenses require a supervised clinical year, and many have adopted supervision language and standards that closely mirror ASHA’s.
That means state licensure requirements didn’t emerge in isolation, they were built using a framework shaped by the same organization that controls the CCC.
If universities were structured to include all required clinical experience within graduate programs, state licenses could move away from post-graduate supervision models altogether, and the CCC would lose its structural relevance.
And that matters.
ASHA controls the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA), which sets minimum standards for SLP graduate programs.
ASHA also controls the Council for Clinical Certification (CFCC), which sets standards for supervision and the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC).
When one organization influences education standards, supervision models, and an optional credential, the system will protect that credential.
The CCC is optional.
But because state licenses borrowed ASHA’s framework, and employers followed suit, it has been widely misunderstood as required.
Our state licenses should strive to be better than what ASHA has proposed, not copies of a system designed to preserve a product.
This isn’t an argument against supervision.
It’s an argument for modernizing education so supervision is integrated, meaningful, and sufficient before graduation.
Fully license-ready at graduation shouldn’t be radical.
It should be the minimum.

Most people approach the exam like it’s a game of memorization.
But here’s the truth:
The exam isn’t trying to trick you. It’s testing how you think.
It’s measuring your clinical judgment.
Your ability to prioritize.
Your ability to choose the BEST next step.
This is why strategy changes everything.
When you learn how the exam thinks, passing becomes possible. 💛
