Possible mold concerns are drawing attention to student housing at Cal State Monterey Bay. In a March 4 report, student newspaper The Lutrinae reported that some students have raised concerns about possible mold in both on-campus housing and certain off-campus rentals. CSUMB told The Lutrinae it received 38 work orders related to mold concerns over the past year, but said none were confirmed as mold after inspection. The report is also renewing attention on housing conditions during the wetter Central Coast months, when moisture-related issues can be more common. The university says students should report suspected problems promptly so they can be evaluated. One of my students brought his graduation cap 🎓 to class today and asked me to sign it alongside some of his favorite professors😊 As we talked, he shared that this had been his best semester because he found a balance with his professors, classes, and learning experience. Hearing him say that I was one of his favorite professors touched me. I showed up not only with the academic content, but also with honesty, emotion, and lived experience. That has always been part of my pedagogy and my commitment to decolonizing the classroom. I remind students that we are human beings first, and that our stories, emotions, struggles, and identities belong in educational spaces too. There were moments this semester where I questioned myself and wondered if my vulnerability meant I wasn’t meeting expectations or measuring up as a professor. Today reminded me that authenticity and humanity also teaches. This was such a beautiful reminder that as educators, we should show up in the ways we hope our students show up in the world, especially for the students who will one day become educators themselves. Excited to meet our first CSUMB intern cohort! 🌊 🦦 This incredible group, with a majority of women, have been placed in various departments across our city—ranging from Fire and Police to Building and economic development. Thanks to the support of my colleagues, the paid internship program I helped bring forward will provide students with invaluable, hands-on experience in local government, giving them a firsthand look at what it takes to help run Seaside. As a proud CSUMB alum, I understand the power of internships in shaping future careers, and I’m confident this remarkable class will not only grow in their knowledge but also make a lasting impact on our community. Growing and retaining local talent is key to building a stronger Seaside, and these interns are the future leaders who will help us do just that!

The Interpretive Naturalist / Reservationist supports our mission of creating amazing memories for our guests as we offer 1.5 hour tours aboard a 27ft. pontoon boat on the Elkhorn Slough. The Naturalist presents engaging educational content regarding the region’s history, geography, and wildlife to promote an appreciation for its unique habitats. Outstanding communication skills and the ability to provide high-quality, friendly customer service are critical to success in this position. This position requires availability five days a week (TBD) between the hours of 8:30AM and 5:30PM. The average schedule for this position is 32 hours/week, but tour times and workload vary according to seasonal trends. This is an hourly position with a starting wage of $20/hr. + gratuities, which equal around $50/tour on average, and add an additional $10-14K to annual income.
