Meet Maxi, a superstar with L4-L5 spina bifida who’s been making incredible strides at SMILE Therapy in Toronto! With a combination of DMI therapy, NISE-Stim, functional electrical stimulation, and some really good bracing, Maxi has surpassed all my expectations since I saw him six months ago.
I’ve seen over 420 children with spina bifida, so I have a good sense of what outcomes to expect—but Maxi’s progress has been truly astonishing. It’s amazing what the right therapy at SMILE and dedication can do! #curesma #sma #spinalmuscularatrophy #Spina Bifida

Today is our cousin, Shane’s, 4th Geneaversary! 4 years ago today he was dosed with an AAV9 viral vector that invaded every cell in his body and left behind a working copy of his missing SMN1 gene to produce the SMN protein needed to keep his motor neurons alive. This past year he has done a million things he was told he never would. To name a few, he started swim lessons and can do backstroke, started riding his new fav horse Gypsy, played tee-ball, continued playing sled hockey, learned how to get himself undressed, learned how to walk with his gait trainer and braces, learned how to get into crawling position and hold it (and move some limbs), learned how to get down the steps on his own, and so much more. He continues to conquer each day doing really hard things with a smile, sense of humor and wisdom far beyond his years.
