Want to know my TOP NINE best tips for working with dance photographers??
1. Have pose ideas ready to maximize our time together. YOU know best what you are capable of and where you are with technique. When you have ideas ready to go, the photographer can more quickly determine what you are capable of and then together you can start brainstorming more creative ideas.
2. Arrive early, stretch out and warm up before your session begins. You want to look your best in photos just like you would for the stage.
3. Be sure to bring several wardrobe options, discuss this ahead of time with your photographer as to what will work best with your chosen location.
4. Bring flip flops for location changes. For on location sessions, you don’t want to be walking through fields or city streets in your pointe shoes or ballet slippers. Bring extra slip on shoes for easier location changes.
5. You know how important hydration is for dancers! Pre-hydrate and bring plenty of water.
6. Bring the same kind of energy you would for a dance class. Dance photo sessions are no joke when it comes to how much energy is required!
7. Wear your hair down to show movement in your photos! Photos are always more interesting with perceived motion. Costumes, skirts and wardrobe that moves are an added bonus!
8. Be open to trying new ideas! My favorite is when I show a dancer the back of the camera and they say “I had no idea I could do that!”
9. HAVE FUN!!! Always! Don’t take yourself too seriously and enjoy the process. If you don’t enjoy your photo session, most likely you won’t look back fondly on your photos either! JOY is captured on camera. 😀
