Here’s one of my favorite tunes from this band. ‘Freak’ by Silverchair, released back in 1997. What a great riff. This is live at Pinkpop Fest. #grunge #postgrunge #90sgrunge #silverchair #danieljohns

@silverchairband frontman @danieljohnshq has escaped jail time over a high-range drink driving crash north of Newcastle. The 43-year-old rockstar will instead serve a 10 month community corrections order and he's been disqualified from driving for 7 months. Johns was driving on the Pacific Highway at North Arm Cove in March when police say he crossed onto the wrong side of the road and collided with a van. He returned a blood alcohol reading more than three times the legal limit. Johns admitted himself to rehab after the crash. The court told that he hasn't touched alcohol since. 7NEWS at 6pm. #DanielJohns #7NEWS

I F*CKING LOVE SILVERCHAIR The Story of “Tomorrow” Daniel Johns was 15 years old and writing about TV documentaries while the world tried to project adult angst onto him. Silverchair — “Tomorrow” • Live Performance, 1995 Johns wrote the lyrics at 14 after watching a documentary on a wealthy man trapped in a run-down hotel. The “hard to drink” water and lack of a sink were literal descriptions of the setting, not metaphors for heroin or depression. The “fat boy” in the lyrics was his nickname for the protagonist of the show. The band, then called Innocent Criminals, recorded the entire Frogstomp album in just 9 days. They were still in high school in Newcastle, Australia, during the height of its global success. The track was originally released in Australia in 1994 and globally in 1995. It became the most played song on US modern rock radio that year. The album was produced by Kevin Shirley at Festival Studios in Sydney. It reached number one in Australia and peaked at number nine on the US Billboard 200. The band won the “Pick Me” competition on SBS’s Nomad to get the song recorded professionally. Was Silverchair’s success proof that the “grunge” sound was a global cultural movement, or was the media’s “Nirvana in pajamas” label a way to dismiss the band’s actual songwriting ability? ——— #Silverchair #DanielJohns #Tomorrow #90sRock #Grunge Frogstomp
