Some of the best wine experiences don’t feel intimidating. They just feel intentional. Last night at Tannin Wine Bar in Kansas City**, we spent the evening with Austrian winemakers Ingrid Groiss and Paul Achs, tasting seven wines that showcased precision, elegance, and serious depth. Ingrid poured vibrant white varietals and a beautifully expressive rosé. Paul brought structured reds including Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch that were layered, earthy, and incredibly balanced. Each wine was paired with five courses of Austrian-inspired dishes — from schnitzel and Arctic char to rich goulash and a cherry almond strudel that finished the night perfectly. The conversations, the storytelling, the way each wine evolved with the food… it reminded me that wine is at its best when it’s shared around a table. Grateful to sit with the team from Breakthru Beverage who helped bring these wines to Kansas City and made the night even more memorable. Experiences like this don’t require certifications or credentials. Just curiosity and a willingness to show up. Deep green walls wrap the room in a richness that feels intimate, while soft golden light spills from chandeliers above, the marble surface in the bar feels like a piece of living art. The bar itself feels cinematic. Bottles are spread around the building, a curated library, each one holding a different corner of the world. We settled in with a bottle from Austria, a Grüner Veltliner that shimmered with a pale gold hue. Crisp, expressive, alive with minerality. What made the experience worthwhile was being approached by the sommelier, Jill. A wealth of knowledge on regions and a genuine curiosity for discussing tastes and the history of the wine in front of us. She took her time, not just explaining Austrian wine but in opening up a broader conversation that drifted all the way to Texas. Bringing my attention to the only Texas wine they carry which is from William Chris vineyards. Another wine I’ll have to explore. It never felt like a lecture. It felt like being let in on something. Between sips and the low hum of conversation the glass in hand encouraged an appetite to try their starters. This is what makes a wine bar memorable. a simple evening of conversation and good company accompanied by interesting wines. As the last pour settled into the glass, I decided to make a return, next time to try their full menu and the wine pairings chosen by them. I encourage anyone to find this hidden gem and enjoy it for yourself. Sit at the bar as I did or have a full sit down dinner.
