I stopped by my childhood mall over Christmas vacation. After hearing it had been sold, I knew this may be one of its final years as a shopping mall and knew I had to see it one last time!
🛍️ Opened in the 1980s and once the region’s main shopping hub
🛍️ Still partially open, but stores are closing as leases end
🛍️ The property has been acquired by Electric Boat and will be redeveloped into office and training space
🛍️ A rare chance to walk through a place mid-transition, before it fully closes in 2026

Not many things compared with a trip to your local mall in the 80s, from department stores to toy stores, to record stores to arcades, they had it all.

The eerie Chambersburg Mall in Pennsylvania. No stores remain. Not a soul in sight. Regardless, the 90s pop music still echos through the empty corridors. #deadmalls #deadretail #liminalspace #liminalspaces #backroomaesthetic #backrooms #creepy #deadmallseries #danbell
Malls across America are removing their fountains? Why is that and what does it say about us a society?

It’s honestly heartbreaking to watch so many shopping malls across Central New York slowly fade away. Places that were once full of life, where weekends meant crowds, laughter, and memories, now sit quiet and nearly empty.
Great Northern Mall really hits the hardest. It’s been through so much over the years, changing hands, trying to reinvent itself, holding on as long as it could. And now seeing it in the middle of full scale demolition feels like the end of an era for this community.
But maybe this isn’t just an ending. With Micron on the horizon and new energy coming into CNY, there’s real potential for something better. Mixed use spaces that bring people together again with retail, entertainment, dining, and living all in one place could give this area a fresh start.
Hoping what comes next honors what used to be, while building something even stronger for the future.
