I'm a 28-year-old 3rd Officer. Here are 7 habits I believe every young seafarer should build before becoming an officer.
Being a good deck officer isn't just about knowing COLREGs, SOLAS, navigation, or completing paperwork.
It's about becoming someone the Master and crew can trust when things get busy.
These are the habits I'm trying to build onboard:
1. Anticipate before you're asked.
Think one step ahead. Know what needs to happen next.
2. Understand the “why,” not just the procedure.
Don't just follow the SMS. Understand why the procedure exists.
3. Stay ahead of your paperwork.
Logs, reports, checklists, permits, and records are part of the job. Don't let them pile up.
4. Walk the ship.
ECDIS, CCRs, computers, and paperwork can't replace actually seeing what's happening on deck.
5. Ask before you assume.
You don't need to pretend you know everything. A good officer knows when to verify.
6. Leave things better than you found them.
Make the next watch easier. Fix the small things. Pass on useful information.
7. Think one step ahead.
Don't just react to what is happening. Think about what could happen next.
Because being a good 3rd Officer, deck officer, or seafarer isn't about knowing everything.
It's about being prepared, observant, dependable, and trustworthy.
Still learning. Still making mistakes. Still becoming a better officer.

⚠️ Перегруз судна сокращает запас безопасности до критического уровня
Судно может сохранять ход и управляемость даже тогда, когда допустимый запас по осадке и остойчивости уже практически исчерпан. В этом и заключается главная опасность перегруза: внешне рейс продолжается штатно, но любое осложнение резко повышает риск аварии.
Высокая волна, резкий манёвр, смещение груза или поступление воды на палубу способны быстро изменить ситуацию. При недостаточном запасе плавучести и остойчивости экипаж получает значительно меньше времени на реакцию.
В мореплавании запас прочности — не формальность. Это резерв, который отделяет рабочую ситуацию от аварийной. Чем меньше этого резерва остаётся ради дополнительного груза, тем выше цена любой ошибки.
